Excited

I am heading to South Africa tomorrow with my three boys. Very excited for my first trip for plains game. I am not taking my rifle as we are going on an extended trip with an extensive itinerary and a few internal flights, plus international transfers. I will hopefully get some good pictures and a write up.
Enjoy, every stalker should hunt over the red soil of SA and most who go once quickly return, make Namibia your second trip, less FAC aggravation and a safer and happier venue IMHO

Fantastic right up.

30 plus years ago I wrote my thesis on Game Ranching in Southern Africa. Most of the farmland throughout RSA, Namibia, Zim etc was all down to cattle and crops. Many of the marginal areas where struggling but still cattle where king.

Most antelope where in the few game reserves. All you saw on the farms was the odd duiker and bushbuck with Kudu up in kopjes and hills.

A few were beginning to think about game ranching - using indigenous animals rather than introduced cattle and sheep. Allow the bushveld to regrow, rather than having European style pasture and have a mix of species that use all the different browse layers and ecosystems.

They need minimal inputs from the farmer - a bit of fencing, water supply and some supplemental feeding in harsh times.

Fundamentally they are there for meat, and game meat is part of the staple diet for all. And farmers earn really good additional income from running lodges, safari camps and offering hunting.

All parts of the animals are used, with game skins widely used for leather, floor coverings and clothing. You can buy game skins in pretty much any shopping mall, and many houses will have skins on the floor - think sheep skins in the UK.

Yet our cockwombles in power want us to kill off all our own native deer, and heaven forbid if wanted to bring back a skin of animal you have actually shot your self. But perfectly fine to buy one in a shopping mall turned into a handbag.

Happy memories made that will be with those boys for a long long time.
