Favourite red deer stalking photos?

Still a favourite after all these years!View attachment 387054

My first (and only) wild red:

Some crackers, the above two in particular
A few but without red deer!
Good scenery!
Am I the only one who clicked on this thread expecting to see lots of magnificent red deer in their prime? Mothers and youngsters, rutting Stags jostling, huge herds sweeping across beautiful landscapes etc etc

Instead it's just a load of dead animals 😞

I like scenery and Live Photos as well but no harm in photos of the culmination of a hard day on the hill as well. I like seeing well presented photos

It's been a while since I stalked in the snow (Sutherland on the Hinds), and perhaps the passage of time has dulled the memories of the frost-bite, the bitter fingers, numb toes and risk of hypothermia, but it was like the opening line from a Tale of Two Cities:-

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
Nah it’s brilliant. Whisky never tasted so good than by the fire afterwards.

Whisky never tasted so good than by the fire afterwards.

Funny thing.

The Head Stalker asked me why I bothered, as I told him I hated every aspect of stalking on the Hill.

"Because, when it is over, and I am safely back in my own home; Game Book written up (the missed shot pages, to be sealed until after my death!), feet up in front of an open fire, dram in hand...it's then that I love Hill stalking".

Honestly.

Why I love it is the places it takes you, and the folk you would not otherwise meet. There is the joy.

1989, near Kingussie. 3 stags in about 3 hours, with a 243 rifle, 100g LEAD bullets. Longest shot was around 200yds. I was running a lodge at this time, and my payment was a stag each week. Mobile phones were not that common then, so taken with a real camera.
And yes I know I look like Mickey Pearce, off Only fools and horses. I was slim built and could walk miles in those days. Having just come back from a 2.5 week stint with clients in the highlands, and with 20 stags accounted for, I am now due a couple of weeks rest. I am aching all over!!
