Favourite roe buck?

Well folks, with ‘fake’ roe buck season around the corner,(still pretending that’s April) I was wondering if folk would be interested in posting some of your favourites from the past? Doesn’t have to be the biggest - although that’s fine by me! Or perhaps your most memorable.

Anyone seeing any clean yet? Have seen the odd report in the past of older bucks being clean in later Feb.

My first is my favourite. By no means a monster, and at 40yds away it wasn’t a challenging shot, but having it come in to the call unseen and suddenly appear staring at me was awesome.

Very hard to put favourites but these two for the length of time I saw them are up there.
First was an old beast I'd known for 4 years and only seen 4 times in that time.An unbelievably wary lad who let his guard down finally during his last rut.
Was 4 weeks after having ACL reconstruction and the leg broken and straightened and a crutch was the sticks.
Second was 5 years on the camera and had thousands of pics in that time along with watching him rut 3 of those years.
Took a good friend out last April and he took him so I didn't pull the trigger on him.

Thanks! Certainly a weird one. Have wondered about having it shoulder mounted down the line but I think fitting a normal cape might be a struggle

Quite right! First one I managed was a doe. Wish I had a photo but solo hunt and gralloching into the dark took over

That first is a monster. Although both belters! Is nice when you’ve a bit of a story behind them. I have one in the house which the old man wanted to shoot in velvet,(think he was seeing tenderloins). I held off and couldn’t see him for 1-2 years and when I did catch up with him, he went 128.5 cic. Definitely not one to scrape the velvet off anyway!

Wow, that buck in the first photograph is the buck of a lifetime of stalking, what a cracking head on him.

I took this guy maybe 8 years ago. There were a lot of ash regen saplings I could see were being frayed in spring nearby so set up a bushcraft cub portable overlooking a headland corner on an estate near Binsted I stalked. One evening I think around June the lab, Rigby and I stalked in. He sat under the seat in a ditch. A doe came out about 30 yards to my left and browsed the bramble toward us. She got within about 5 yards of the dog before winding him and ran off barking. I videoed the whole thing. He knew she was there all the time and never moved. I thought well that’s bu99ered it but stayed in seat. About 30 mins later this guy popped out. I shot him with my favourite rifle at about 60 yards. The Ron Wharton .275 Obendorf Mauser action. He made bronze and the seat was christened ash bronze

The video. The dog steadiness. The rifle and the medal made it for me

This was my first ever roe buck and a stunner. Really symmetrical. Unfortunately my partner ‘accidentally’ knocked it off the side and broke the nose, relegating it to the garage.

Stunner! Did it score? Been there with the broken heads. Never been tempted to put a cape on it?

I didn't get it scored. I’m not sure it would of made anything as it dont think it had the weight but I certainly think it would of made top scores on a few of the other bits.

I had thought about transplanting the antlers to a similar size scull that isn't broken. I never really considered the possibility it could be caped afterwards. I have seen some monstrous attempts at mounts so finding the right person might be a challenge.

My two favourites. The malform was a 40th birthday present from a friend, although we were out for a certain medal buck but this appeared instead. Was still more than happy with that! The other is my first and only gold medal. Its not just the fact it went gold (although I was over the moon it did) it was the way it managed to pan out. Was out stalking before work on a Saturday morning, the stalk had come to an end and had got back to the yard and my work mate wasn't there yet so thought I'd just go and check the one grass field again, and there he was! And the rest they say is history!

This is mine, I got him one sunny Sunday morning early in May. I was walking up a hedgerow splitting two fields, he strolled out at about 150 yards then stopped, someone was smiling down on me, my best head to date.

First was my first mature Roe buck. Second is a very old buck taken in 2023, which had a number of his teeth missing as that old.

So both are very memorable.

My first roe buck which was a 45 minute stalk most of which was crawling on my belly in long grass.


These 2 which I took the first morning we were let out from lockdown



And this lovely boy that I had seen around all summer and missed once, finally caught up with him and it’s the 25-45

Also this one which a buddy took as I had been watching him with the kids so I couldn’t pull the trigger, went gold. Could have left him to get fully clean but my buddy only comes down to shoot twice a year.
