Feeding deer

Thank god there are a few on here speaking some sense!

And feeding Fallow! You may as well be supplementary feeding your rats as well!

There is another thread on here doubting the numbers of deer in the UK - this is why there are too many, idiots thinking that they have to supplementary feed them! Get them shot!
So I’m an idiot for thinking of the welfare of an animal which the estate owner enjoys seeing in his land? We shoot plenty to keep the numbers right and manage for quality, only shooting what we can sell or what requires taking. We have taken 30 odd so far this year so we shoot more than the infrequent social stalker. My question was to see what others do in similar situations with the withdrawal of an abundant feed source. Not to the called an idiot by someone.

i answered the question but the concept is mad, if the land is that over stretched for natural food, its already gone wrong. put the feeders out and hammer the deer. you also have to consider what they are used to feeding on as gut microbs wont be able to extract goodness from the wrong food source but they will eat it and do worse.
educating the land owner and killing more is probably the kindest thing to do

if the numbers are right you shouldnt need to feed them

Out last night with thermal and was watching deer travelling a decent distance to get to a beet field.
The deer are way in distance and the farmer on this land doesn't mind some activity on his fodder as he says its stops them from hammering winter barley and trees.
I've been known on a prolonged spell of cold to get a bale of silage to see them through.
Not all land owners view deer as liabilities some see them as assets and don't mind helping them now and then.

It has been known.
Feeding can be used as a management tool to get deer into an area where you want them to be, and holding them there.

My principle intention is to get deer in front of the cameras, the images are viewed and individual deer identified.

A couple of years ago a nice buck appeared on a feeder, his antlers were a birds nest of rope with many loops containing branches where he’d been caught up. I was able to monitor him from feeder to feeder on cameras until he dropped his antlers, happy ending but if he had become emaciated beforehand not so happy an ending.

Also the feeders/cameras have shown me that what was a pair, maybe 3 Roe have increased in numbers dramatically, I don’t shoot the Roe..... because I don’t want to!!

Furthermore I object to being referred to as an “idiot” rein it in pal 😡

Eh?
Was that reply intended for me?
I haven't referred to anyone as an "idiot", and have no intention of reining anything in.
And I object to being referred to as "pal" 😡

😂😂😂
My my, don’t be so touchy geezer 😂

The original referral to ‘idiots’ who provided feed for deer was made earlier by a Stephen Toast who obviously does much of his stalking from an armchair.

Yes. Yes you are.

If you feel the need to feed fallow then you obviously aren't shooting enough!

Do you leave grain out for pigeons as well?

Object all you like. You won't change my opinion.

Feeding deer is utterly ridiculous.

You shouldn't need trail camera photos to tell you the population of roe on your gtound has increased, especially if you aren't shooting them.

Which is why the population has doubled in the last 30 years.
More RTC's, more landowners that do see too many deer as a liability.
Its quite simple isn't it drive more carefully and respect each others ways.
Badger population has quadrupled since the 70s nobody whines about that also causing RTC.
IMO there is nothing wrong with a bit supplementary feeding in times of need especially when are winters are so varied year to year.
-10 on Saturday night with 3" of snow on ground in November, last year we had couple weeks in March that would qualify as winter weather.
European countries often plant a cover crop solely to feed deer and also supplementary feed when needed it's about respect for the animals
