Field Gralloch

Its maybe just me, but I've never really understood why people do a suspended gralloch. As long as it's on a clean piece of ground, you can do exactly the same job with it lying down (and in half the time, with no extra equipment). If your not very good at gralloching, you're still going to mess it up wether its hanging in a tree or not.
Each to their own though.

Totally agree. My technique is best described as 'suspended bleeding' as in gralloch the deer on the ground, punch the knife into the h/l chest cavity a few times and hang it up to bleed, carry on stalking. When you come back the carcass is much cleaner to handle and lighter.

Clean ground? How do kniw it’s clean? Would you eat your dinner off it? You can’t see bacteria. The air is very cleaner!

Each have there place, however if you knocked cattle/pigs/sheep over cleaned them out dragged them "down the hill"
then tried to explain to the power buyers " The Public" that it was fine as it was a clean piece of ground you would be out of business by the end of the week.
If the venison industry was as well documented as the main meat market it would struggle as the public only see the few you tube clips, and it in a vac pac.
Yes we all do our best but compared to any main line business then it may as well be in the dark.

Not much choice but to do it on the
ground when you are stalking on the open hill.
Maybe called a deer forest but there are no trees.
It's quite possible to do a gralloch in these conditions and still keep it clean that's one
reason we tend to only do a green gralloch on the hill the rest is done back at the larder a small slit is all that is needed to do a green gralloch it does not need to be split from a@@e to breakfast time, sometimes you.can get a pony or an ATV to the shot site but not always if you have to drag any distance that's when a small slit comes into it's own little chance of any contamination that way.

Even back in the larder I don't particularly like to do the rest of the gralloch suspended
when I was younger I would just bend over and do it on the ground now my back is not so good I need to get on my knees or ideally
on a gralloching stool.
There is no right or wrong way whatever works for you as long as you produce a clean
hygienic carcass.

I made one from some dinghy blocks and 3mm sailing rope. Breaking strain is well over 200kg so more than enough for most. Just need a folding gambrel, currently using an a hook. On a side note it turns out my daughters netball hoop can’t take the weight of a CWD……93D704FB-A055-4CDB-83A9-C232DECFBCC3.webp

Much better and cheaper than these Stalkers Mates and the like too.
