If I could only have 3, it would be those.My go-to selection is 22lr, .243 & .270
Estate rifles for Americans primarily. Are they for his personal use or estate rifles? If the latter and you're catering for Americans, I'd stick to .30 cals
I'd be tempted to buy a job lot of Howa .308's, if they're rich , T3's. I wouldn't bother with .223 unless you're prepared for long discussions on why we can't have AR's in this countryEstate rifles for Americans primarily.
Picked up a trainees Howa .308 on Thursday - absolutely staggered by the weight. But he was a young and fit WO2 - me, I'm old and knackered so I'll stick with my Tikka T3X LitesI'd be tempted to buy a job lot of Howa .308's, if they're rich , T3's. You have little faith in the 6.5 cartridges if you feel you would need a 308 win for "larger deer "I would go for .22lr for vermin, 22/250 for fox and .308 or 30/06 for deer. I don't particularly like the .243 for deer but it does dual service for foxes and deer so can understand the choice instead of the 22/250. Another dual purpose option would be to squeeze in a 6.5 for the fox and small deer role and keep a 30 calibre for larger deer.
You fickle man!It is not too late to change, so I’m thinking of dropping the .270” Win in favour of a 6.5 Creedmoor and a 30-06 Springfield. One as a British estate gun, one as an American. The three smaller calibres seem ok, unless there was something substantially better than .22-250 for fox and small deer.
Yep, pretty much. I don’t think the 6.5s hit anywhere near as hard compared to the 308. They are ok on small deer though and do kill larger deer, just not as convincingly. You have little faith in the 6.5 cartridges if you feel you would need a 308 win for "larger deer "
I think The nations above GB where far larger beasts reside might disagree strongly. At equal weight bullets a 6.5mm bullet will have a higher BC giving a higher retained velocity and less wind drift from the much better BC . 308 win is a fine hunting rifle but using say a 140 grain bullet ( which is more than we need in the UK ) the same case as the 308 necked down to use the 6.5mm using the same 140 weight bullet the guy with the 308 will be at a large disadvantage.Yep, pretty much. Thinking of dropping your 270 for a Creedmore!!! Being an estate manager is a management position. He has managed some of the most prestigious UK shoots over the last nine years. The same as a manager of Jaguar Land Rover not necessarily having operated all of machines on the shop floor. With all his experience can't he figure out what calibres to ask for?
By all means help with the forms, these can be daunting, and also with what makes of firearms. But if he has no idea about what calibres it makes me wonder how much specific experience he has got for the job.
Not my .270”! Mine is happily sat in my cabinet awaiting summer!Thinking of dropping your 270 for a Creedmore!!! Slippery slope, next it will be turning Vegan and getting a Tesla
