Filling a new FAC

Glad to see you have included a .270 🤗 (@VSS will be sooooo happy too).

Bought my first during COVID, great calibre, not so great gun so finally bit the bullet so to speak and have swapped it for a Tikka T3X Lite with a F&D UTS231 mod - stunning combination. Has done all that I have asked of it, millimetre perfect from short to silly ranges. Took a welfare roe buck kid and 2 muntjac bucks last night with minimal carcass damage. Normally, at this time of the year I'd have put the .270 back in the cupboard to await the start of fallow season and reverted to my .243 or .308s. However, "bedding in" this .270, its effectiveness and accuracy has surprised me.

I would go for .22lr for vermin, 22/250 for fox and .308 or 30/06 for deer. I don't particularly like the .243 for deer but it does dual service for foxes and deer so can understand the choice instead of the 22/250. Another dual purpose option would be to squeeze in a 6.5 for the fox and small deer role and keep a 30 calibre for larger deer.

You have little faith in the 6.5 cartridges if you feel you would need a 308 win for "larger deer "

So long as we retain lead in the 22 RF i will keep one . Cheap to feed and a massive amount of different powered ammo
223 rem suits me for rabbits to the smaller deer species / fox and its not a barrel burner ( remember the military use .223 for full auto )
22-250 can however cab be hand loaded to 223 velocities and even .22 Hornet performance and i think thats relevent
the majority 6.5 cartridges will kill large Game way over what we have available in the UK and it has killed just about all the worlds big game

Now I shoot a lot of 22Hornet it will do all my rabbit shooting and foxes , crows etc etc . and act as a slightly louder HMR WMR ( until you put a bigger moderator on )
The .260 rem can pick up the deer and any other large game
Thats 2 rifles to handle everything but the Dangerous Game we don't actually have in the UK

It is not too late to change, so I’m thinking of dropping the .270” Win in favour of a 6.5 Creedmoor and a 30-06 Springfield. One as a British estate gun, one as an American. The three smaller calibres seem ok, unless there was something substantially better than .22-250 for fox and small deer.

You fickle man!

Yep, pretty much. I don’t think the 6.5s hit anywhere near as hard compared to the 308. They are ok on small deer though and do kill larger deer, just not as convincingly.
I think The nations above GB where far larger beasts reside might disagree strongly. At equal weight bullets a 6.5mm bullet will have a higher BC giving a higher retained velocity and less wind drift from the much better BC . 308 win is a fine hunting rifle but using say a 140 grain bullet ( which is more than we need in the UK ) the same case as the 308 necked down to use the 6.5mm using the same 140 weight bullet the guy with the 308 will be at a large disadvantage.
The fact is 6.5 maintains more speed through the flight path , less wind drift and the longer length in the bullet aids deeper penetration.
Of course we are really are comparing the same Eggs regarding powder capacity from the same case of the 308 !
All this means nothing if the shooter takes shots inside 200 yards on a broadside shot , the 243 could and will also do the job equally and will have enough steam to break both shoulders and exit also

With all his experience can't he figure out what calibres to ask for?
By all means help with the forms, these can be daunting, and also with what makes of firearms. But if he has no idea about what calibres it makes me wonder how much specific experience he has got for the job.

Being an estate manager is a management position. He has managed some of the most prestigious UK shoots over the last nine years. The same as a manager of Jaguar Land Rover not necessarily having operated all of machines on the shop floor.
