First .223 reloading results

Hmmm.
A few issues reported with Superperformance
In this case bolt strip and clean sorted it.

Two boxes of Superformance collected from local RFD last week FOC courtesy Hornady and Edgar Brothers Armoury/Returns Supervisor.

Can’t fault them for customer service regards the issue

Didn’t t have any further issues with remainder of the box in question that was used up on paper or with factory Remington and PPU or with home loads that I am in the process of developing so suspect a couple of duff Hornady rounds for whatever reason.

Suspicion was also more or less confirmed that issue is not an isolated one as when collecting them and discussing issue with RFD he showed me a handful of same rounds that had been returned from one box purchased by another Customer recently and strongly suspected as being from same batch.

Will see how we go with these

You say the conditions weren't as still as you'd have liked (totally get the need to itch a scratch lol) but was the wind from left to right?

22.3gr has a POI further right than the 22.7gr so you may be having to take into account a poi to the right at longer ranges IF that POI is consistent.

The 22.7gr is marginally right and looks to be in line with the PUU bench mark so seems a constant plus you have a lovely group. May be worth trying them out too distance to check if the group opens considerably.
Yes, wind was left to right which I didnt compensate for as going for grouping, I am using the 4 shot 53gn Hornady result as the benchmark which was absolutely spot on, the PPU for more of a ball Park figure for 55gn .
Now I am somewhere close for these Speer 55gn, I will be loading a dozen 22.7gn along with others and will be patient to get still conditions.

Managed to get out yesterday evening with the the latest batch of N133 & 55gn Speer reloads for testing.

3 shots on each 75mm target @ 100yd with powder charge either side of the previous 22.5gn (22.3gn to 22.7gn) and as the previous 23gn was all over the show.

Not quite completely sure how to interpret yesterdays result as first 22.3gn grouped well along with last 22.7gn group, Conditions were not as calm as would have liked with a pretty consistent left to right steady breeze.

Plan now is to put some more 22.7gn together along with some 22.9gn and some 31.1gn and see how we go on a calm day with no wind or breeze which didn't help me yesterday.

The bottom target is the remainder of the factory PPU 55gn for comparison

Load 22.7gn, zero rifle, shoot foxes.

Looks like your good to go! A job well done mate 👍🏻

Nice to see how your fettling is getting results for you.
Not .223 but .222 just for comparison :-
top group is 50 gns Vmax over 22gns N133;
bottom group is 55 gns Sierra over 19gns N120.
Both shot at 150 yds prone off bipod (unusual for me - usually quads!) in a strong left to right wind. These are my pet loads for fox and roe respectively - developed many years ago and never felt the need to change as both are killing shots so no need for scope adjustment between the two.

Afternoon Gents

Managed to get out earlier and find a nice quiet sheltered spot do a little more load testing, looks like the CZ also likes the 55gn SBK's with 23.1gn of the N133 so a secondary diet available if not wanting to use the Soft Points for any reason.

I put a few of the Speer 55gn Soft Point & 22.7gn N133 together to double check accuracy on 100m target and also to check accuracy at distance.

1 x 2L pop bottle full of water at 200m using white the label and the barcode as a central aim point on 12x mag, well pleased with results, made me smile.

If you don't mind me asking what size are the orange stickers your aiming at? What mag on the scope do you use?

What primers are you using also? I first tried federal primers in my 223 loads with groups around the 1moa mark, switched to BR4 CCI primers and groups shrank considerably! Maybe worth trying a different primer if your not happy with any results or struggle to get under 1moa.

I'd also be inclined to use a fine aiming mark and with higher mag, I shoot on around 10x but load dev is done with 15-20x for a refined aiming point. Perhaps try dry firing 5-10 rounds to get in the groove prior to shooting for groups.

Also what neck tension are you using...1 thou, 2 thou, or more??
Yes, a more precise point to aim at would help a lot.

Agreed, a better aim point would help, next plan is to put a larger mag scope on the rifle with a finer ret as the 12x is not quite enough for my needs, looking for an S-Tac 2.5-17 x 56 that I can put on and possibly leave on that will also provide better clarity at distance with the Pard than the present scope being used does.

How much more accurate do you need? 1/2 inch group is excellent for hunting.

Just like to keep the paper punchers on here happy as well chippy ;)

But in all seriousness, the Leapers Accushot 3-12x44 scope that I have on there is ok for shorter ranges rim fire etc. but the mill dot ret is one of the largest and thickest reticles I have ever come across and not as good and clear as it could be at the longer ranges with pard007 attached so a finer reticle and better quality scope would do the rifle and quarry a little more justice.

Evening all,

I managed to pick up a Sightron S-Tac 2.5-17.5 x 56 with illuminated German A4 Ret to mount on the .223 and to replace the existing Accushot 3-12 x 44 which is very crisp and clear but as I'm now confident the rifle will perform at the longer ranges I wanted a higher mag scope with better reticle to do both it, and the quarry, a little more justice.

After mounting the scope and bore sighting first, it was then zeroed on paper at 25m and again at 50m with some Remington factory loads I wanted to use up and to get close enough on target before going out to the 100m mark on the 75mm orange discs that I have been making use of whilst load testing.

With the Speer 55gn Soft Point & 22.7gn N133 reloads, the first shot landed a tad to the left of center, windage adjusted (a little too much) and the second shot landed off to the right of center, a couple of clicks back and we're not a million miles off.

Glad to report that with the assistance and input of you guys on here with advice and the load development, that we are now up and running.

Many thanks

N133 22.7 with 55gn vmax is what I feed my 223 t3. I’m also getting half moa. I’ve been feeding that diet to foxes for a couple of years now and have no complaints. A tub of powder last for ages!!!

Just away to start with my acquired .223… have 53grn vmax here

Now …. To hijack thread slightly …I have loads of N140 … anyone using it successfully in .223 ?

Paul
