£750 fine and 5 year ban from keeping dogs.

I’m sure the usual lurcher sympathisers will disagree but to anyone with a shred of respect for Roe deer, running a dog on them is neither a sport or an acceptable form of deer management.

Brilliant to see forensic DNA technology being used to support this conviction.

It's not a case of right or wrong. It's either what you believe to be acceptable and not cruel and the opposite. However, I guess if it's against the law, certainly in one sense, it's wrong.

The OP says anyone with a shred of respect would never run a lurcher, but that’s wrong.

Looking at the findings then, if you have a wayward spaniel on a bird shoot and it fks off after a deer , you could get banned from keeping dogs for 5 years- very slippery slope for dog owners.

Pity they don't prosecute the stag hounds that chase the red deer on the Quantocks. The QSH supporters restrict shooting of red deer to ensure they have deer to chase.

And Lynx! And all the do gooders want to reintroduce them. I fail to see the difference myself. Just one animal using it’s ability against another in the struggle for life. Happens a million times a day in the British countryside….

The public perception of us is very important, we need to engage and educate in a rational way with the public who do not wish to engage in our activities. Unfortunately, in my opinion, there are a significant number of us who are destroying our way of life from the inside because they will not accept this.

Perhaps someone with more experience can tell me, just how do you train a dog to select which deer is in season at any given time, and also to identify the best animal for culling?
Any useful tips will be passed on to the gentlemen that I occasionally encounter, as their dogs don’t seem to have mastered it yet.

I agree, the public should have been taught to accept that hunting with dogs is perfectly acceptable

The ‘gentlemen’ in question do not seem overly familiar with dog leads, and when there are 3 or 4 roe together I fail to see how the sex and/or condition of each individual animal can be ascertained by a dog whilst in pursuit.

For the record, it is not the dog that I take exception to, or even the act of using it to take lawful quarry, it is the people running the dogs that have a complete and utter disregard for the law, the landowner or the animals that they are chasing down.

I also acknowledge that does not automatically include everyone with a lurcher.

I think you are refering to what is commonly referred to as poaching.
Until it becomes legal to shoot poachers again it's not going to lessen.

It's people who think that it should be legal to shoot poachers that are sealing our fate, in my opinion.

If stalkers looked after the deer population in Scotland there wouldn’t be a problem, the place is lifting with roe. Cant walk a lurcher off lead because of it.

Haven't a clue how the QSH supporters can do that unless they are major landowners. Sorry but it sounds a little sour grapes. " Hunters are stopping me getting stalking". Stag hunting was there way before stalking and has no great effect on deer numbers hence deer are culled by the FC on a lot of the Quantocks. Be careful what you wish for, shooting is next in line for bans and prosecutions.
