I think its the chilli and fennel which make it more of a punchy Southern Italian recipe - no expert but they are absolutely lovely, worth the prep time. The recipe seems heavy on the salt and fennel - I've tuned back a little bit on the fennel a bit and make the balls smaller but thats personal choice.
