Ford Ranger 2.2 how bad?

Looking for a new pickup and have almost given up hope if finding a Hilux that isn't riddled with tin worm.

My next preference will Be a dmax, but I am considering a ranger as there's a fair saving v a dmax.
Is it just the oilpump that causes issues ( if I bought one and got the pump changed immediately would I likely be in a good place) or are there other common issues.

You must be looking at some old Hilly’s

Youngest looked at was 2013, most here are well "farmed" given the sea air (I sometimes stalk on fields that the tide hits) rust is a problem.

Seen a few rangers online that look to be city slicker vehicles so won't have the sea air and rust issues I'd hope.

Yeah my ‘13 has rust on the rear arches, but that’s it, just the rear wings - but that’s normal and cheap to throw on new rear wings. The pickups curse!

Friend has 21 plate Ranger Wildtrack with 36 k miles on it, no problems whatsoever, driving it and then a 22 plate Hi Lux Invincible, the Hi Lux is like an old tractor in comparison.

A lot of the rangers were built on friday afternoons unfortunately even the 2.2 is pretty thirsty and gutless, but there are good ones about. If you can get one with the oil pump done its a bonus. a good condition chassis and body hilux is a rare thing as not many have been treated regularly, their chassis is even more prone to rot than the early navara d40, and they're bloody aweful to drive. Later D40 is a great motor and plenty of good specimens about since the snapped chassis issue. Dmax is probably less prone as the chassis does drain well and more substantial than the above, do suffer with injector issues causing dpf regen problems but good allrounder. Later L200's not to be sniffed at as very capable good chassis body etc but some have electrical gremlins.

I have a 3.2. Thirsty but fine so far. The underside is not new looking, but I can’t find any evidence of the rust penetrating rather than just being on the surface. I do intend to underseal at some point.

Is the oil pump thing the same on the 2.2? On the 3.2 there’s nothing wrong with it as such, but you can’t let it drain when doing an oil change as it can’t self prime. The trick (I’ve read, I’m yet to change the oil) is to drain and refill within no more than 10 minutes as that prevents the pump emptying and requiring some form of manual re-prime.

When I was buying, the advice I got was all modern trucks have their gremlins, so find one you like which fits your budget and roll the dice…

I have a 2.2 14 plate , drives ok but build quality leaves a lot to be desired constant breakdowns with sensors and pipes coming off etc , made of chocolate

Two of my mates have 70 plate Ranges Unfortunately both they have the wet timing belt syndrome!!. One went at 80.000 miles and had a full ford service history. The others at around 95 k . Ford recommended changing timing belt at 125 K😳

the new vw amarok has a ford 2.2 engine in 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ my mates not very happy to say the least has had 3 amaroks loves them but now hates them vw build quality gone out the window….. he saying ford ranger with vw price list he not a happy chapie 🤬🤬😡😡😂

Ended up buying a 2 seater commercial discovery 2 td5!

Virtually no rust on chassis and 120k miles. Sunroof leaks and it's mouldy headlining inside, but It passed the test and my landy mechanic thinks its a gem.

I have known a few friends/clients with Ford Rangers. One chap bought a brand new Raptor................engine blew up in less than a year. Had no end of issues with Ford. Another a good friend had a 2.2 oil pump packed up 600 miles from home. Engine a right off.

The mechanic I use locally, is well known for engine rebuilds. He gets a number of Fords in for a rebuild. Most with head gaskets blown, but some with complete engine failure due to oil pumps packing up. Usually these are earlier models, but also newer models too.

Stick with Isuzu, they are as a rule bomb proof in my opinion.

I’ve a 2.2 ranger bought brand new 2016 only issue I’ve had is injector seal leaking on the rocker cover had it repaired couple of weeks back £280 including oil change 47k on the clock no problems keeping it well serviced by main dealer. 40+mpg on a run I was told the oil pump issue is on early models especially the 3.2 I’m no expert though.

TD5….Best engine LandRover ever used, and the only one they designed themselves.
Mine had covered 168K when I sold it, the only repair was blanking the EGR off.
Plus consumables.
Ken.

Cut your losses man!
I give you FB’s Jimny fleet …….

Silver one now 19 and just turned 130k yesterday. Red one a mere infant at only 16 and 70k.
You know it makes sense……

Not surprising there is the odd horror story on a Ranger seeing as in 2022 they had a 57% market share of the UK pick up market, reducing to 45% last year.

Simply a numbers game…

Wouldn’t touch a Ford. Hilux’s can be prone to rust. I know of a couple that are rusting badly and they aren’t old, under 5 years.
