Forestry training fund…

I have had confirmation of funding for my DSC2. Does anyone know if the grant covers registration with the authorising body NGO BDS etc? And if so how I register, is it done through the training provider?

Thanks in advance.

Mine didn’t - paid for that separately and used the funding to do the DSC2 course.

Hi. Firstly congratulations!!
Secondly you don’t need to pay for membership for the authorising body. I just got the funding for DSC2. I chose the BDS as I did my DSC1 with them through Malcolm. I did not need to pay membership for the BDS, I just contacted Dawn Cope who is the training co-ordinator at BDS and forwarded her the grant offer email. This has a code in it that they use to claim back the money from the grant. Dawn then took care of everything and voila! I was registered for DSC2 and got several emails with eportfolio access details, welcome info, who my assessor is etc.
Easiest to just call Dawn at the BDS and she will talk you through it. You have 3 years to complete the DSC2 from date of registering.
Happy hunting

Whilst that is certainly true for privately paid DSC2, the ATF monies have to be spent in year so in principle the OP has to book and complete his DSC2 before 31 Mar 25. ATF monies are Public Funds and, despite the best will of many government departments, the Treasury insists upon annuality, ie in-year spend.

This from my ATF grant email last year:

Terms and Conditions of Grant Award

By accepting this grant award, you confirm that you agree to comply with the following Terms and Conditions:
  • The Grant will be used to fund the costs of the Training Course listed above.
  • You will contact the Training Provider listed above and confirm your booking for the course for which the grant funding has been awarded.
  • Please ensure that you provide your Training Provider with the following Grant Reference Number: App-000XXXXX as they will require this number in order to recover the costs of the training following attendance and completion.
  • The deadline date by when your training must be completed is 31 March 2024. Should the training not be completed by this date, the grant award may be subject to cancellation.
If you are unable to utilise this grant by 31 March 2024, please let us know immediately.

However, as the DSC2 is a pay-up front service, the OP might be lucky but strictly if it was me, I'd aim to have it done and dusted by 31 Mar 25:popcorn:

I am Led to believe that because the funding is for the dsc2 registration (as opposed to the stalk) the funding is still spent in the same yr, once you book dsc2 you have fulfilled the criteria of the funding, the fact bds then give you 3 yr to complete that is not an issue

That's correct, I got funding for dsc2, registered with basc and had confirmation of the funding being completed

Is this all finished for this year or is there any opportunities again ?
Anyone know ?
Thanks

I got notification a couple of weeks ago that my application for £1k for a chainsaw course had been granted - I applied last year after the round had closed for the year. Basically you may as well apply and see what they say. If you don't get it this year you might get it next.

Have you looked at BASC. I'm sure that they are running a couple of courses through Corinium Rifle Range in the fairly near future, and Kemble isn't a huge hop from Wiltshire. They may have other venues even closer to you.

Sounds like a great idea but I'm just wondering out of pure curiosity where the catch is.
For instance is the grant scheme intended just for those in full time employment in the forestry industry or wishing to enter the industry, or does the landowner have to sign up to some form of forestry management program.
We are approved providers. All of our courses can be accessed through the fund.

Does anyone know if any of those approved training providers give Deer Management Course? I couldn’t find anyone but only BDS offers this course who is not registered in approved trainers list.
Jelen also offer this on an FC funded basis.

Can you apply if you live in Wales?
If it's as I read previously you could apply if you lived in Wales but the grants are for work being carried out in England.
The Welsh assembly have no such scheme, and at present and no plans for such a scheme.

Does anyone know how long it takes from submitting an application for the grant to being notified that they have been successful?
