German driven hunting help

Have had a bit of practice on moving targets, got some hi viz caps arm bands and a reversible jacket that’s bright red on the inside. Was going to wear my tweed plus 4’s boots and gaiters shirt tie and jumper with the red fleece jacket on top, take my merino stalking thermals and gloves with me and layer up accordingly. Not taking my own rifle, I don’t have a scope that’s suitable and the hassle of taking it. Using one out there. Our host just told us to wear “country attire” but that’s a pretty vague description these days!
Very lucky boy and can’t wait!

Two of the best bits of kit I have bought for cold weather boar hunting is a heated vest and heated gloves. I gave up on wellies years back and now wear a pair of miendl insulated leather boots withe gaiters .The clothing you intend to wear on the hunt , try it at and home see how your gun handling feels. Nothing worse than getting chilled and it's easy to get chilled even when it's +C. Keeping your legs warm helps keep your feet warm. Some form of insulation to sit on.
If I have a guest over from England for boar shooting I tell them not to give the boar too much lead. Your not shooting pheasants with a shotgun so a boar at normal ranges + - 50mtrs, that is at a brisk trot requires very little lead.

Be aware that the boar hunting crowd wear more stalkers clothing rather than the driven tweed get up !. I wear tweed breeks at the start of the season in France just to show I am British but by November I wear thermals and lots of hand / feet warming pads - people forget about the hands, awful to have frozen fingers when boar appear ( after they appear you will have so much adrenaline you will be warm again). I use a normal UK shooting stick to sit on and take a rest for my rifle so it is up and ready - do not use it to shoot from unless something like a roe stops a way off and I have time. You do need to be alert and ready as nothing happens for ages and then suddenly a boar can burst past - not always when dogs are close - often the big ones will exit by themselves, one snap chance for the shot, you do not want the rifle on your shoulder.
Absolute key - wear far more than you think you need and keep warm. A orange waistcoat type cover can be bought for very little and simply put over your normal clothing. Not sure about Germany but you also need a small trumpet in France, to announce the end of the drive and indicate boar you see.

We are heading over end of October
End of October should not be too brutal. We had our first driven day couple of week ends ago. We had the arse end of the storm from England. Whilst it was about +8C it was a very unpleasant, windy and wet day. I judged my clothing for the day about right but was glad when it was over mid afternoon. A pic of me at an early October boar hunt. The weather was superbly autumnal. Eight boar were shot, three by me. Not bad for a few hours on a Saturday morning hunt.
Enjoy your hunt in Germany.

Just a tip for any shooting really if using handloaded or even factory ammunition. Be that driven boar or even for target work "snaps" or the Mc Queen. In a safe place check that the rounds that your are going to use all can be cycled through your weapon of choice. Most embarrassing to find that you've not set the shoulder back far enough on those reloads you made specially for the outing.

I assume you will use factory ammo bought when you get over there for the loaner rifle. The gun shops will not sell ammo to you without showing a valid Jagdschein so I assume your pal will sort that out for you.
Do not forget to bring a decent knife and a sharpener.
Tell us how it all went afterwards.

Yes got the hunting license all sorted 👍

This is not wild boar related as such, but, warmth.
As has been said, cold is a sod. Under garment, Heated body warmer, fleece over the top. I am mainly using a port west heated jacket. About £70 I think. A 20 fags size battery should last 4 hours on low.
I just bought some heated insoles from aliexpress for my wellies. Wow, they made a huge difference. Cable is too short for wellies, but would be great with normal boots.
Hands, I haven’t found anything electric as yet, I wear fleece gloves, with trigger fingers, they are far and away, the best thing I have ever used personally to keep my hands warm.
And you will need 2 sets of batteries, so one set is charging, whilst the other is being used., unless you buy a big one.
Enjoy the experience.

I would not advise gloves whilst shooting, unless you shoot all the time wearing them, ..... I find it almost impossible to shoot pistol wearing gloves of any design, best way around cold hands and Boar drives is one of these with electric re chargeable hand warmers tucked inside, Hangs around your neck at waist.

I am used to shooting in Macwet gloves, no use if it’s wet but if it’s dry and cold they keep your hands warm whilst thin enough not to hinder gun handling

My choice - lots of layers on body, zip-on Bundeswehr faux-fur-lined overtrousers (put on when up the stand), electric insoles (with external batteries, rather than the foot-incinerating kind) in shearling-lamb-lined boots and Barbour fingerless mitts.

Do you have to tip anyone on a driven hunt like you would on a days shooting over here?
Members in our hunting team put money in the pot for maize and the lunch time bbq and it's understood that the guns will cover the excess if a dog gets injured. Never paid any tips while hunting here in Sweden.

Just back, had a great time. Had 3 days hunting but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to shoot any boar, I had a few Roe though. Very enjoyable and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going. Germans are very friendly 👍

Be careful buying from cheap places because the blaze of orange has to be CE marked. Shops in Europe have been fined heavily for selling no marked orange hunting clothing.
Yes indeed, at every driven hunt in Germany there is a dedicated hunting clothing CE Mark marshall. If your found to be wearing non CE marked clothing you are forced to hunt completely naked.
Kindest regards, Olaf
