The mountain goat or Pyrenean goat is a species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula that is currently found in the mountainous areas of Spain and northern Portugal, although it was formerly also distributed in southern France and Andorra.
They live in mountainous areas between 500 and 2500 meters high, both in forests and herbaceous areas. Its protection has caused its expansion to areas as unusual as the coastal areas of Granada, Málaga or Almería. Being the biggest trophies in Gredos Natural Park. Its diet is predominantly herbaceous, although in winter it becomes more bushy.
This species has strong sexual dimorphism. The females have fairly short horns and resemble the domestic goat. However, adult males also have a longer face and the typical dark goatee. Its weight can reach 110 kilos, which contrasts with the 45 of the female. Their horns are much thicker and can be three times as long as those of the female. Its appearance varies depending on the species and the time of year, since the fur becomes more grayish and lengthens in winter, while in summer it turns brown or cinnamon.
The ibex has diurnal and nocturnal habits, although its maximum hours of activity are at the beginning of the morning and at the end of the day in summer, and during the hottest hours during winter. They are sociable animals, although it is common for them to change herds, which can be made up of females with their young, adult males or adolescents of both sexes. The males and females meet between November and December, during the mating season when violent fights occur between males. A female can give birth to two or three chicks that are born in May.
I leave you here the pictures of the last hunt we carried out in the Gredos Natural Park.
We managed to hunt this beautiful silver medal male with the bow. The hunter was of German origin, it was not an easy hunt since he came with two cameras to record everything for television.
After missing a male early in the morning at noon we managed to get hold of this one, the placement of the arrow was not perfect, but the dog found it easily.
