Hi all,

Off topic I know but does anyone have any good contacts to book a days Grouse shooting up north?
Either purely just grouse or other!

looking to celebrate both myself and my dads birthday with a chance to shoot some grouse as neither of us have done grouse shooting before!

Any help would be great!

cheers Adam

Define "up north"?

I know a chap that organises a lot of walked-up grouse from the Angus Glens through to Caithness.

To be honest, I wasn't paying much (any!) attention to the counts this year so I don't know just how the season is expected to play out, I am aware however that several estates have stood-down their driven grouse this year.

If you like I can PM you an email address?

Looks like record seasons to quiet this year,as said above dry weather, lack of insects then cold and wet have had a drastic effect on the broods

Henry, Ramsay and waters were advertising walked up days last month. They may be fully booked now, but it could be worth asking. Probably Scotland though.

Some places have cancelled already because of COVID especially where they rely on foreign clients but that’s not to say some will not be sold if numbers are good to domestic guns.

Up here we won’t count until the end of the month but hatching looked good, we then had a lot of dry when we needed insects and currently have a lot of wet when they need to stay dry so Broods dwindled a bit (as I understand they did in Yorkshire) so unlikely to be one for the record books but I think there will be some there.

Dick Bartlett at ‘British moorlands’ does small bag grouse days over pointers. I went out with a mate on a day with him and his dog man Roy and had a brilliant day. I’ve never shot driven grouse but have walked them up before but shooting over pointers is very different to walking up.

It makes for a special day ( if you’re happy with a small bag) and doesn’t cost the earth.

What kinds of money does he charge mate?

Sounds good! I think I know who that Roy is, a friend of mine knows him! I’ll ask him 👌

Roy was great and he and his team of pointers ( GWP) worked hard All day in poor conditions to give us a decent day. He comes from Lancs originally. I wrote the day up for a piece in the Shooting Gazette in 2018. Not sure if it is still on their website though. Dick is a straight bat and was good to deal with And honest about the conditions and like
y bag- that spring had been wet and the grouse struggled that season ( 2017/18)
