Well it was a bit draughty overnight here in North Wales, but I got up pretty early to go down to the shoot. I realised that the birds would be a bit fast, 50+MPH forecast but I might get lucky. Set off down the road to find it blocked by half a very big oak tree so that was that. Went home, changed the contents of the truck and put on chainsaw kit, persuaded Mrs. K to come and be a safety person and help with the little traffic down the road. Anyway after a bit of busying about I got the road passable, winched the big bit hanging up free and cut it all up. So I filled the trailer and had about a half ton left still neatly stacked in a gateway so people could get past and nipped home to empty the trailer. Less than half an hour later I got back and some true gentleman had taken the whole lot and vanished. The annoying thing is if they had asked I might well have said, help yourself but it is the attitude which says here is someone who has cleared the road all at their own expense so I will steal their logs. Grrrrr.

David.

Probably the local council, so you'll be getting a bill for the removal of garden waste

Sorry that has happened to you.

I remember being in the Achness Hotel, in Rosehall up in Sutherland one year.

We were renting a cottage at the other end of the village. During the evening there was an almighty storm with all the thunder and lightening.

My wife (not drinking) was driving us back to the cottage, when we came across a massive tree that had fallen across the road just by the stone bridge.
It was completely unpassable.

We returned to the Hotel, parked the truck and then went back to the cottage on foot.

When I went back to the Hotel in the morning to pick up the truck, the entire tree had been cleared and the house next to the bridge had wood for the year.

Always impressed by the speed of that "local clear-up".

Unfortunately doesn't surprise me. Next time maybe leave them too big to handle to you get back again? Some people just can't help themselves 😒

Hmmm. Many years ago travelling back up from a great weekend in Connemara, on a tight bend we (Mrs FB et moi) saw some long-abandoned turf (peat) lying strewn along the outside edge of the bend so yer man here thought ahah, a souvenir of Ireland and we gathered probably 2/3 of a bag full. Great, super, can’t you just smell the peat fire? 15 miles later a gardai car with siren and blue lights overtook us and pulled us in and with its 6 man army escort (in the bad old days) gave us the third degree, warned us we could be arrested and made us take it back to where we found it! For about €2 worth of sod(!) all!!

Is the law in wales different? If you clear a tree on a public road do you own the timber?

I should have an endless supply as spent all day yesterday and a portion of the night before clearing trees from roads and friends driveways!

Good for you for clearing the road in the first place David.
I tend to have the bow saw in the back of the car if I'm going on backroads after the first storms of the year - always handy for clearing the small stuff....
You never know, the guilty timber rustler might just have thought you'd finished!:-| What goes around comes around.....I'm sure they'll get their comeuppance one day!
