Are you looking for a 3ph machine or single phase?
Something just big enough or big enough for any eventuality?

You will probably get more for your money with a larger lathe (assuming you have room) as they are less desirable as far as smaller lathe’s are.
The same applies to mill’s, there’s two in my landlords workshop. One is single phase and you could fit it in your garage. The other would fill it, but it’s worth half or less than the smaller one.

It would be worth your while signing up for bidspotter. A grownup version of EBay, well actually the online portal for auction houses. There’s quite a lot of sales with everything from repossessions to ex military and school/college equipment on.

I get the emails from them with various lots. We have fitted out two joiners shops through bidspotter. Just remember to add the sales premium and VAT (where applicable).

Any supply, i can fit an inverter, needs to be big enough to do 26” barrels i’d say, and work between centres when screwcutting so long bed preferably. Will concentrate on hunting and tactical rifles mainly. Will likely fit a truebore alignment system as one upgrade

If screw cutting barrels you need a lathe with a big diameter hole through the headstock spindle, so model maker types are unlikely to do it.

If your premises suits go for a diesel generator but obviously not all premises are good for that , plenty secondhand just used as firms will buy new and sell at the end of the job ( rather than have one breaking down on the job or store one not being used after )
Invotec are the people for inverters in the UK made here and exported all over well worth betting a waterproof one even if its used inside especially if it's near coolants and definitely near grinding machines

Long bed Imperial Colchester Master/Harrison M300 new a couple of years ago. Factor in around 18K by the time it was modified to be suitable for short barrel work and Anjest & Metradial fitted. Tooling on top of that and 600 group will try to take £1200 from you to deliver and install it. I collected it myself.

Lot of auctions require liability insurance & a risk assessment prior to removal, plus if its still connected you will need a qualified electrician to disconnnect.
Sometimes not just as easy as rocking up and loading..

Im not sure an auction sale is for me, would want the time to check it all properly. Maybe new is the way to go. I saw a pair of nice m300’s in good nick but they were short bed.

I bought a long bed Harrison M250 with the intention of using it to teach myself rifle rebarreling. It's not overly powerful but is perfect for my tinkering and screwcutting etc, and has a big enough spindle through bore for barrels. It's a metric machine but I was able to buy plastic change gears very cheaply for the imperial pitches. It's a 3 phase lathe with inverters for motor and coolant pump - I've wired in a potentiometer for variable speed. Combined with a small milling attachment it enables me to do lots of fun little home gunsmithing projects.
