Personal information that can be used against you or sold. Why do you think these companies get find millions when they breach it.
Yes they get fined because it is against the law.

That does not give you a right to sue them as you have not yet experienced any loss. Don't you understand the difference ?

any data breach is serious but cant quite see why people are starting a linch mob. most rfds have got gunshop written in big letters over there door so there adresses arnt exactly a secret. as for private individuals well 20 minutes spent driving around any rural area would probably give the baddies a dozen obvious properties to target if they wanted so steal guns just by there location, vehicle, indicators of lifestyle and stuff like that. ten minutes spent on faceache would equally give you the names of endless gun owners just by all the photos they mindlessly post of dead animals. go to any clay shoot and follow people home. rob 4 by 4s in the car park of a rural pub during the game season. if you are willing and able to break into a house or car then you hardly need to be a criminal mastermind or go on the dark web to find somewhere that will have firearms.

Think of it from a potential intruder/ burglars perspective. The information states over 64K of user data including name, address, phone number, IP address, last login etc ranging from 2016 onwards. Not everyone who has/ had an account is in possession of a firearm as it could be an air pistol, air rifle, a binocular or even some country clothing. People might have moved houses, stopped shooting, moved abroad, sold firearms/ had them seized etc along with their IP address if they have switched their internet provider. Doubt if many of the darkweb criminals take the risk of going door to door asking if there are firearms stored at the location.

As no payment information seems to be compromised, at present the risk could be somewhere between low/ medium and I am sure all the police forces has been alerted. DarkWeb is full of similar information, possibly the valuable one include ones with credit card/ bank account numbers and a small database like this possibly won't attract much hype. As months go by, the quality of information goes down and eventually gets forgotten.

What could happen now is this information be harvested for other malicious purposes such as further fraud claiming to be compensation from GunTrader or one of the suppliers, bogus emails asking if one is interested in a deal for a rifle or even offer to purchase firearms at a premium, which doubt if many would fall for. While the appropriate authorities carry out the relevant investifation, there's a few simple things we could do

1. Change the password not just on GunTrader but other websites where we might be placing orders from, if the passwords haven't been changed in a while
2. Keep information to a minimal where its not required, such as address/ phone number
3. Stay vigilant of any chatter related to this data and report to appropriate authorities on any suspicion

Let's learn from events like this and watch out for/ help each other.

People wanting to sue the business that is the most useful to us to find & sell guns? Because some of your data is stolen? This sort of bull**** behaviour is why the shooting community in the UK is so easily ****ed over by the haters: We *aren't* a community, but a bunch of petty assholes.

Oh, and I doubt Guntrader has the money or the insurance to give you £20k each. Not that you'd win a suit.

I've been saying this for years. That's why when designing our platform we made sure we encrypted all personal data entered into our platform. Only way to stop it. Triggertraders.com we've only started a few weeks but we do take our data seriously. I'm a network engineer as my day job so well versed in data security breaches and how to stop them. Brother a well versed programmer. We took this aspect very serious. Half why it took us 2 years to develop before release

Sadly they will be lucky to get away without a fine.

Similar shouting awhile back when was it not the metropolitan police who without consent sent the name and address of all their firearms owners to a smart water marker company. Never heard of a gun stolen as a consequence.

Yup.

Sadly I think data being posted to anyone FOC on the dark web is considerably more worrying that a smartwater company.... this is an absolute unmitigated disaster of biblical proportions for the shooting community, and I don't suspect it will just fade away.

One component of the leak is as follows:
Advert Data
Datatype: UserID,AdvertID,SellerID,Hidden,Created,IPAddress,AdvertType,ContactType

Note, ADVERT TYPE - which would no doubt indicate whether the item was a firearm, moderator, etc etc

I've just had an email from an Alexander Andover apologising and assuring me that any data lost relates only to personal details. In my case, they have my name, my (old) email address, the first half of my postcode, and my mobile number. I'm not particularly concerned myself, but I can see how others would be.
They have my name, current address, contact number and email address... 🤦

No, the fact they have inadequate security which has now been leaked so any member of an OCG could come through my window or door at any time is concerning. They had a **** security system and they are now learning that they should have put some money into it. 'some of your data' is stolen, mate they've got addresses, names, phone numbers, email addresses and IP addresses...

I’ve emailed them and closed my account, for all the good it will do.
I asked whether my data was compromised but they dodged answering that question. Shambles.
I’ve been trying to close mine but cannot see that option anywhere. Been through the FAQ’s and so-called help section. Nothing.

Emailed them but if in the meantime anyone knows how to do it I’d appreciate a heads up.
