Gwps

Hi , Iv seen a couple gwps work and really like them , I intended to work one as a generally hunting dog letting it range and find quarry on the moors with a gps and with my lurchers , sort of looking for the best line or breeder or country which would possible be best , my current lurcher is 1/4 gwp and really like her work ethic thinking a gwp should take to this type of work nicely , Iv read loads horror stories about them shooting out 100s meter hunting but that’s perfect for me , literally got 1000s and 1000s acres to work hunt and enjoy , also need to be able to rain it in and be a family dog as Iv a young daughter that the dog will spend time around

Any advice is welcome

Depends on the dog I'm sure, but so far ours is brilliant in the house (much less bother than a collie we're fostering) and brilliant with our 6 year old daughter. No need to reign him in since he was about 6 months, before that he used to race around the house a lot and cause mayhem. I haven't really done anything but basic training with him yet, but given the chance he will run hundreds of metres (and just run in on anything he comes across). I love him though, so does everyone we meet - he's great!!

Put lots of time into finding the right lines with health checks and the training and it’s hard to find a breed to beat them. They hunt well and are usually good in the house with people and children.

That’s what I’m doing now mate , just researching trying to speak to the right people ,

Overall I’d be a fan of the breed, you might find your lurchers are redundant once you get a good one. My advice would be to try and source a UK breeding line dog, some of the continental lines are aggressive with other dogs will happily murder the neighbours cats and are sharp with people too. They’re big strong and fast and can easily pull down a deer, so be careful.
If you want it to hunt and point train it that way, their gobs are fairly questionable as it is, ragging on deer and foxes definitely wont help.
Have a word with your local HPR club and the KC breed secretary, they should be able to point you in the right direction, they also regularly turn up with specialised pointer rescue groups, most definitely worth a try especially if you’re not going to trial it.
They’re very much in vogue at the moment which is reflected in the price. Great dogs, but not for the amateur.
Best of luck.

Find a dog thats from a good working line bred in england and spend a lot of time getting the basic training sorted there is a difference from a dog that will work at range and an uncontrollable one that just does as it wants really good with kids but they must know that the dog can play with them but they cant play with the dog

Try Rory Major over at Bryantscroft gundogs , he has trained my pointers and believe he has a good line,he will know a good breeder if not ,very good trainer with HPR breeds and fairly well known roryandjane@btopenworld.com

Where I used to beat the keepers Mrs worked one. Called Lola she was hilarious, just ran straight through all the cover with the cry “Lola! Lola! F’ing dog!”

They are dogs bred to work, they key thing is training, training and more training
This.

Mine is 9 Months old now. Previously had a HWV so not new to pointers. He’s a handful. Firm boundaries and as @rem284 says training, training and training, 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Give him an inch and he will take a mile.

Tough to get cross with him as he’s so good natured and just loves playing the court jester.

It’s going to take a while but if I do my bit he has huge potential. I wouldn’t recommend one to anyone who wasn’t very experienced with gundogs, preferably pointers. The power and speed of them means things can go very wrong very quickly!

They're a great breed but I haven't heard of them being worked alongside lurchers before. You'd have to put a lot of work in to avoid it chasing particularly if it was out watching other dogs course.

I’m probably looking to work it a little different to what you lot are describing I want it to work along side the lurchers and chase and hunt , my lurchers hunt at serious distance if they pick a scent up they just go

I'm struggling with your choice and I'd like to understand. Are you wanting a wire for its nose or its strength in battle. If you run it with lurchers its likely to give tongue because its not going to like not keeping up. And when your lurchers give up a wire will keep going for miles and miles on scent. What will you be hunting.

My lurchers will hunt for miles mate Iv had them at 3/4 miles away and cover total of 8 miles in a hunt , im watching a gwp for a start of a replacement for lurchers they bring much less attention than a running dog Iv got gps so they can hunt as far as they want , will be foxes they will be hunting

For the terrain and work that you want the dog for, I would suggest a pup from Danish lines as they tend to be lighter framed. Rory Major or Chris Gray types.

Pretty much Pot luck with the breed now in the uk . You can get a fantastic dog or a nightmare , a great work obsessive dog or one that truly is not interested, perhaps one in the middle.
Lines ? They have gotten very mixed up now in the UK so luck is a big element. I would not have another personally because of this factor, actually telling a lie as if i found an adult dog that was exactly the character i required ( as an adult) that needed a new home i could make the decision right there and then. That said a good one is a good one when it comes to adult dogs.
