Yesterday was a hard and long day but well worth it and was the end of a few weeks of planning and hard work!
The wife and I organise a Crown Green Bowls competition between two clubs each year in aid of The North West Air Ambulance. It takes a fair bit of preparation and organising but we do it every year to thank the NWAA for their "gift of time" which helped save Marlene's life back in 2014 when she had a major heart attack - The North West Air Ambulance flew her to Manchester Royal Hospital in just 8 minutes and the Consultant said that the speed that they got her to hospital almost certainly saved Marlene's life - Something that we will both be eternally thankful for!
It is surprising how much organising goes into organising something as simple as this and how much work, thought and preparation is involved, especially with the catering which we always do ourselves - Marlene spent over two hours in the kitchen on Saturday evening making up over seven dozen filled rolls along with various other snacks and nibbles (Things like sausage rolls and cheese rolls etc, all of which Marlene made herself) to make sure that everyone was well fed! I supplied all the beers etc (Definitely a man's job) to ensure that no-one got dehydrated and remained in "good spirit", very important as we all know, especially when all of the players from both teams are very good friends of ours!
The day went well and there was some very good bowling along with a lot of banter, laughing and joking accompanied by some pretty good weather. It a very tight match which was won by Wardle Bowling Club so all I have to do now is to get the cup engraved with the name of this year's winning team .
All told we managed to raise £250 for the North West Air Ambulance which will be paid into my bank account this morning and then transferred straight to the NWAA Bank Account within an hour or so! Now £250 might not sound much but every penny is important to a charity that saves so many lives each year yet gets no government funding and relies entirely on donations to continue saving lives!
Yesterday evening was spent with a couple of relaxing and very enjoyable cans of beer for me and lager for Marlene, which as far as we were concerned were very well earned.
Edit - Please note that I have not posted this to win myself any pats on the back or brownie points, (I really do not want that) it is to raise awareness to the need for fundraising events for charities like the Air Ambulance or the RNLI who rely solely on donations to enable them to continue saving countless lives while sometimes putting their own lives at risk yet are still getting no funding from our government!
