head torch or hand torch

Petzl all the way. They are the best for battery life and power. and the original leaders in LED head lamps.

Petzl are good, but they only come with fixed lighting modes. The LED Lenser has the ability to be focused from wide to narrow beam and can also be dimmed. Saves battery life and can be adjusted to suit requirements. You could easily go lamping with it when set to narrow beam on full power as it is extremely bright! I've had both and much prefer the lenser!

Mate just gave me a LED Lenser, think it's an H7, never used a head torch before as i thought they were a bit gimmiky, very impressed and as Monkey Spanker says bright enough to lamp with on the narrow beam.

Without a doubt LED Lenser, good strong beam, and a red light for sea-trout fishing, great value I paid about £16 for mine about 5 years ago and it`s still as good as new

Head torch for me. I'm still looking for one that lets you preselect the mode you want before you switch the power on rather than having to click through all of them to find the one you want or to switch off. I'd like to be able to select the red led and switch that on and off during lamping without engaging the white light modes.

hi finch. i have a petzl headtorch which does exactly what you want. hold the on button and it will switch to red led which is great for lamping. not sure they make it anymore but they are constantly changing models so worth keeping an eye on. also they used to make difusers to change from narrow to wide beam on some models. these could be replaced with red difusers.

as another note my vote goes for petzl all day every day. i use one for work pest controlling. has got to be my most used piece of kit. has been dropped on hard floors from loft hatches. dropped in water and generally abused but has stood up to it all.
