Hello Everyone

I came across this forum well searching for DSC1-2 courses, I've recently returned to the UK and even more recently moved to the lake district. I've never hunted before (only ever shot a firearm on a clay shoot many years ago) but its something I've always been intrested In, particularly Deer Stalking. I thought I'd register here as it seems to be a good place to get advice on how to get involed in this activity.

Welcome from Essex, see if you can find someone in the area either to take you out or to get on a paid stalk so you can see if you like it first before spending the money on DSC as nothing beats so real work experience

Hello Mike.

Yea thats a good shout T.eddie I have found a place up in Scotland that offers an introductory course prior to the dsc which I'm hoping to get onto. I'd love to find someone in the area to take me out, I dont really know anyone here yet though. I dont know if I'm getting this wrong or not but, i've seen with alot of the paid shoots that you pay for the guide, you pay for kill, then you pay for the trophy and then you pay for the venison is that normal? at the moment I don't think I could afford that to begin with I don't really mind about the trophy for me its more about the meat, that being said I'd probably like the trophy from my first I guess.

You would usually have to pay for each "part" so to speak but some may be more expressive than others and if you can find cull stalking opportunities then that again is usually cheaper, take a look in the stalking section and can also do a post asking for recommendations in the area

You will find you could usually do it all depending on the species for maybe <£200 also depending on how far to travel not sure if you are a member of basc but they do some cheap stalking in hockwold and Hampshire

<200 seems fair really considering I might be able to fill my freezer. Thanks for the good advice, I'm not a member of basc yet but il will definitely be considering it when I'm looking to get my f.a.c but I think that might be a while off yet hopefully by the spring when I'm abit more settled up here il be able to go out and see what all the fuss is about. I have enjoyed reading the threads on here already and I'm getting excited for it more now

It all takes time, best of luck getting settled and getting stalking

Welcome from London.

From clays to elk in minutes few! Nothing if not ambitious....................... :)

Personally I would just book yourself a stalk on cull hinds at the moment. Use the estate rifle. If you find you like the sport, you can think about putting a bit more time and money into it. If you want to progress, do a few more paid stalks (keep all the receipts as evidence) and book a DSC1. Look at applying for a FAC.

Then do the fateful thing and post on here as to which rifle/calibre you should choose.........................

Good Advise, I heard that clays- elk is the natural progession stages for uk stalkers. clays-elk-polar bear- unicorn or so ive heard. I've managed to get in contact with a fella up in scotland who has offered to take me out to show me the ropes in scotland in a few months so im really looking forward to that. great idea to keep the reciepts i didnt even think of that. Im really glad I joined this forum though you guys have been really helpful so far and i've realised it takes a little more than a quick google search to get information like this so sincerly thank you. as for the rifle and calibre question the same people who gave me the progression advise said it doesnt matter about the rifle as long as its over .50 correct? :-|;)😏

Personally, I would draw the calibre line at 20mm, mainly because anything that shoots it weighs quite a lot, and you would be getting through bearers at an awful rate.

Welcome, there is a few guides operating in the Lakes, PM me if you'd like their details.

Hopefully you will join the BDS and we will see you at one of our events including range days at Grayrigg in the South Lakes, most days you can borrow a rifle under permit.

There you go as , NickJ above says. I was going to say, you could wander on a nature walk to spy out some deer, there are several species on your door step. Welcome to the site.

BC.
