Help needed

i had something similar a while back, action screws had worked lose after id been in there to alter trigger pull, drop of Loctite solved it.
and a 5 mph wind which technically not much, can send a 223 off that much at that distance, no idea about the 204 though,

This is a 6.5x55

Why do you think you need to clean the barrel so often?
If I deep clean my . 204 it takes at least 5 rounds to come back to normal.
Most barrels need a wash of lead to shot optimality so you might actually be over cleaning it.
Have you let somebody else shoot your rifle and seen how it shoots?. Better still have you shot their accurate weapon at the same ranges?

If not Try above.

If still no joy suggest you remove scope and fit another reliable scope and see how you group.

Finally get a good gunsmith to bore scope it just to make sure it's not shot out.

D
Yes double checked 2 other rifles with no issues on grouping

went back to the range at lunchtime with some factory ammo, it was even worse than my home loads. i suppose the upside is at least my home loading hasn't gone to 💩.
tested it with the mod on and off and it definitely makes the grouping worse and throws the zero off with the mod on, so that answers that question. running it up to Precision Rifles tomorrow. if Callum turns round and tells me the barrel is on its way out i am tempted to go with a .270 this time round.

Maybe worth a check of the torque on the 3 barrel retention screws?

Unlikely but worth a once over .... ? Also check the front forend retention screw? If it has come loose you may experience a bit of intermittent contact with the barrel.

The likely culprit is the moderator but worth checking these too?

My 404 Swede prefers to run a tad faster than that - but with monolithics. Can't see it being the barrel being kaput if your shot count is relatively low and you run stuff at that speed and have a proper cleaning regime.

Will be interesting to see what they say......

The groupings in the OP (15mm at 100m then 25mm at 200m) seem ok?

Therefore it’s not likely to be a problem with barrel wear or moderator. If this WAS the case groups would usually open up rather than move location…..

All checked, completely stripped the rifle and rebuilt it

Was clover leafing, groups should be a hell of a lot better than they are

That was earlier this year, a quick check at the range at 150m

What factory ammo did you use!
So it got worse with different ammo!!! Hmmmmm

Any pictures of groups or did it look like some SSG WITH HALF CHOKE?

Did you play around with scope or just using the one aim point!

Did you run some home load after the factory ammo! Groups ?

Yes shot some home loads after and they were better, but have definitely opened up.

The group on the bottom right was with mod on, top left is 2 groups merged, shot with no moderator, one with factory the other is home loads, group opened up at 100m but still useable but as soon as you move out to 200m they get to a level that I wouldn’t be happy shooting at live game. Used to have very tight groups at 100 and good groups at 200m
Not going to mess with it anymore, going to run it to a professional and leave it with him to assess and I will go back to my fathers .270 which is on my certificate, until I find out what’s going on with it.
