Henry bigboy

Now then folks I've owned shot guns for years , had an F.A.C for just over a year and would like to increase the size of calibre . On my original application i put in for a .22 and .243 I only had 50 acres I was granted both then found out the land was passed for a .308 😡. However I now have a further 250 acres surrounding the original land open moorland (got lucky) plus 26 acres and 5 acre in different locations, I'm after a Henry bigboy .44 . Plus an open licence . My problem is the local constabulary say I need a minimum of 5 lots of land all past for different calibres ? When they asked my why I wanted the .44 Henry I told them that on average the deer are no more than 50yards away thus I don't need a rifle such as a .308 which has a massive killing range compared to the Henry which will do exactly the same job without the range . You will laugh at this . Their answer was for not allowing the Henry was if you was to shoot a human at close range the .44 would do more damage as it's a bigger calibre !!! I replied I'm sorry but any calibre from .22 upwards will be just a fatal !! West Yorkshire seem to make up regulations as they please ! Would an open ticket make any difference. I've also joined rifle range. What do you think ?? Please no abuse lol

Personally , I wouldn't want to be shot with a 44 or a 308 , both would hurt a lot . I have to say , that is probably one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard . You have my sympathies .

I'd of told them I don't want either for human shooting.
It's how you provide them with a good reason.
The slightest hint that you are asking for one will fail.
Crazy I know.
Will the levergun help you tackle a close range deer in thick foliage over your other rifle? If so there is your reason. They can rubber stamp the application then.
Forget asking for an open ticket.
Just write a letter with pen and paper, copy it and send it to them.
They will probably ask for your license to amend it or 'open' it.
Either way you made a written statement regards land you have authority to shoot on.
Good luck and the 44 is a fine choice 👍🏻

You can have the Henry long ranger in .243w if its what the firearms officer have given you a permit for.

I have a mint old parker hale in .243 I fancy something different you don't often see and the big boy (sounds gay I know ) fits the bill .

Yes I wanted a lever gun in .357 or 30wcf but the prices on used ones were so high I went with a new Bergara ba13 in 300blk instead.

No reason not to use what is essentially a pistol calibre on deer if you in Englandshire. North of the border there is a min velocity requirement of 2450fps.

A pistol calibre - 44 Mag etc - works by punching a big hole through the animal using the weight of the bullet to make the hole. The wound channel will pretty much be the diameter of the bullet. They are low velocity and realistically are a sub 100m type cartridge. Think 22 long rifle type trajectory. And if you point in the air in might go about 1 mile.

By contrast a High Velocity rifle bullet such as 243 or 308 uses a much smaller bullet travelling very much faster. It works by expanding rapidly then punching through and setting up a shock wave that tears and rips vital organs as it goes through. The wound channel will be several times the diameter of the bullet. Depending on bullet construction it may well also shed a a lot of fragments into the body.

Given that a rifle bullet is lot more aerodynamic than a pistol bullet and travelling a lot faster it will likely travel three or four miles if pointed in the air.

In many ways a straight walled pistol type cartridge is probably a much better tool for use on small bits of ground at close ranges especially where there are people close buy. Its quieter, less energy and much less likely to go a long way. It’s why many of the densely populated parts of the US restrict hunters to straight wall cartridges.

As an all round deer cartridge where one day you take a deer at 30 yards, but next one is out at 250, a 44 magnum would be limiting. But for short range use, either on foot, or sitting up, why not?

When putting in your variation give a good sound argument for your choice of cartridge/ rifle.
