High Seats

Steel wire to deter antis with a chainsaw!
A ratchet strap to secure the top of the seat with a padlock on the mechanism prevents that being undone by a casual thief/ vandal, a chain around the foot of the ladder with a padlock and a bag of postcrete around the end of the chain should be enough?

Around here it’s quad bikes that get nicked, high seats are lower down the list…

Has anyone put up a sign to say ‘you’re on a trail cam so don’t touch’ - as a deterrent?

‘you’re on a trail cam so don’t touch’ then the pikys will go looking for the camera to steal too. Data protection act may make it illegal.

I can definitely recommend Sussex High Seats (on Facebook or Friday-Ad usually advertised). Made of metal but in two parts unlike other more expensive ones. The last double one I sourced was £210 and it's plenty big enough for two adults. As they are made in just two pieces there isn't all the joins to assemble like in Keith's ones so less water ingress and less faff setting up on site. He will deliver or arrange a courier too so location isn't an issue.

Well worth checking out and a phone call or chat will allow you to make modifications too.
Quick search of FB revealed nothing - have you got a link to their page?

I can't seem to find it either. I have messaged him direct to see if he is still making them. I hope so as I need another couple this year.

Well if there isn’t one there they’ll spend a long time looking…..

You’re alright on Data Protection ( or the General Data Protection Regulations which has superseded the DP legislation) if you’re using a camera to protect property ……in a space where you’re an authorised person ( holder of sporting rights, land owner, etc) provided that you delete the data in a reasonable time. Obviously if the individual commits an offence then you can use the visual data to prosecute…. Otherwise what’s the point of all the security cameras?

Of course if the camera doesn’t exist no issue….

Sadly an area where I have some professional responsibility….

How about a wooden ladder form made up say 2.5x2.5 inches (I am not a structural engineer) then drop in some rebar and fill it with concrete? after hardening just swing it up into the tree and take the form away? last over a 100 years and nobody would want to take it away. Lateral thinking at work there some might say I am being daft as a brush!!!!

Just stand there with your sticks nice a quiet...... 🤫 🤫 easy no digging as that works when foot stalking...

It sounds like one of Keith's high seats is going to be the way to get me started.

Thanks guys!
Good seats but make sure that you get the single plus version. The narrow ones are only suitable for shooting straight in front and IMO aren't fit for purpose. Don't scrimp on seats that you might want to use for years to come. I've seen some terrible designs for sale on here. Far too narrow and no V behind the seat to stop it slipping on the tree. If you see any being sold that fit this description then walk away. If you ask any questions you will be told to mind your own business or worse. Clearly not someone aiming for repeat business that's for sure. If they're much cheaper than the equivalent seat being sold by Keith then walk away because it will have something missing.
Good luck and happy hunting!

I’ve just knocked up some wooden seats, and tried rebating the rungs in with a router for extra security (I’ve added wire since). It’s worked a treat, and the seats are rock solid (I’m a bit of a lardarse at 6’ & 19 stone so tend to over-engineer!) 1DEEA224-DE44-41BC-B6C8-07416678B4A3.webp

2x nails hopefully went into each side of the rung, screws tend to loosen over time, rung should be a bit longer sticking out as that's where the dreaded rot begins to chew away at the wood. Good work though. 👍

As previous posts, make sure you get a generous sized seat, even if you stalk alone, you'll never know when you'll need the extra room. It is not that more expensive to manufacture those extra inches. I may offer seats when I have more time. I've manufactured and designed my own with fully adjustable rails that are a pleasure to use after crushing yourself into tight, fixed rail seats.

I could make one... I have all the facility's... Welding, cutting, stock etc etc.

But I kind of feel by the time I've designed it. Made it and had it powder coated I may as well have just bought it....

Unless anyone has any plans available?

He’s not doing the highseat work anymore
Yes I just had a conversation with him. He said the materials have got so expensive he'd have to charge 50% more than before. For the quality and size I think even that increase is worth it. Hopefully he will start again though.

That's a real issue at the moment. I've just finished with a steel company so know a bit about steel prices. It will come down, or should come down as a lot of material was being held back whilst people were willing to pay the higher rates. Energy prices will not allow it to drop too low, but hopefully to more realistic level in the not too distant future, when I'll look again at manufacture.

I may need some for next Autumn, so should it transpire, I'll put some info on here as the more I can manufacture, the cost will come down.

I’ve had a couple of cheap high seats like it. They are cheap and that’s the only thing going for them. Thin metal that rota very quickly. Too narrow to swivel in. Vou can build better for less in tanalised timber and it will last longer. If you want a quality metal high seat then you won’t go far wrong with Keith’s High Seats (Google it) about 50% more expensive than that one but 300% better.

Here’s one I built in half a day for less than £100
Another vote for Keith’s seats, not cheap but very well made and great rust protectio, often with high seats you do get what you pay for!!!
