Hoppes number 9 cleaner

Unless you are for some reason set on Hoppe‘s No. 9 take the advice given above and move on to Boretech. It is more effective and doesn‘t smell.

Was/is Hoppes No.9 the copper solvent, black label on a brown glass jar ? I've a jar at least half full...if you're ever up in West Aberdeenshire...

It contained benzene, a carcinogenic. It may of been stopped from sale or they changed the formula. I have some but rarely use it.

It was 11 bottles in my stash. The USA is now charging $19.99 for a 2 fl oz bottle. A little went a long way so I will have to live till 125 to use them up.

Cresylic acid is the aroma that you seek, banned by the nanny state as a potential carcinogen. Fortunately I still have a very old can of Young's black powder cleaner, best enjoyed with a used paper shotgun cartridge!
What colour is Black powder after you clean it?
Ken.

I have never bothered to check but I suspect the part that I have highlighted is accurate. I have half of a very old bottle that I do not use but I keep simply because the aroma transports me instantly back to my old fella's gun room all those years ago. The more modern version smells entirely different.

With regards to the OP I can only echo what has been said above by several members. Ditch the 009 and get yourself some Boretech products. You will never look back.

I was pushing a few patches through the other day and had a rummage around the cleaning box, found a very old tin of Young’s 303 that I had acquired when my father passed away a few years back.
I couldn’t help but wet a few patches just for that evocative aroma from my childhood.

Just as well I don’t have a man bun otherwise I’d have been blubbing my eyes out. 😭
