My mate and I were out last night looking for Charlie on the sheep farm. Tried a variety of calls around the spot that the farmer has seen a fox a couple of evenings recently, all to no avail. Did we see a fox ? Did we hell as like.
What we did see were the small group of fallow that trotted into the field we were in, wander down the hedge towards us to within 100yds just as I rose to go and collect the caller. They froze, turned and ran in a loop around me before stopping again not 75 yds to my right. Jokingly I pointed my fingers at them (a la a 7yr old pretending to have a pistol) and shouted BANG !
So they ran again ... a whole semi-circle of a loop again only to stop and stare from about 90yds to me left.
We have permission on the deer on this land and take a good number of CWD's there each season, but the fallow are far more transient and rarely do we manage to get one in the crosshairs ... until the ruddy things are out of season !
How do they know ?
