howa .243 or Tikka .222 for fox

Go for the treble 2,set it up 30mm high at 100yds and it'll kill everything you put a crosshairs on out to 250yds,just make sure the rifle has been stored with the moderator off.
243 is more costly to run, noisier, doesn't kill a fox any better and it's a Howa

Im in Ireland and the ammo is priced about the same, in fact 243 depending on the type/brand canbe got cheaper than .222
I do take your point about the noise difference between the 222 and 243.
You're not a Howa fan? Ive never owned one

Think I'd go for the 222.
You know its done nothing its accurate and its ready to go with scope etc.
And its also a good price

Tbh thats kind of the direction Im leaning now, especially after all of the feedback Ive gotten, and the points you just made.

If you're on the fence for Howa/Tikka then best get to an RFD that has both so you can have a look over them side by side. Both will do the same job just as well. But do yourself a favour don't pick up a Sauer/Mauser/Blaser while you are there!

Everyones got a opinion, Personally I'd take a Howa over a Tikka everyday for the 3 position safety, and the value for money. The next person along will tell you they like a 2 position safety and to part with more cash for a Tikka. The only real difference is the options for aftermarket bling, if you like to customise get the Tikka.

My .308 is a Tikka, Ive handled the Howa 1500 before, never shot one to be fair. Short of winning the lotto, the day I leave an RFD with any of those is unlikely 🤣🤣

Its primarily a foxing gun Im after so the bling level will be zero, I don't like carrying expensive things through ditches and hedgerows

I started this so I thought I'd post an update, I went with the Tikka .222 in the end. It took a lot longer than expected to come back, picked up the rifle and it was a bit worse for wear.

Got it sorted and out for zeroing. Dealer only had 1 brand of .222, Hornady 50gr V-Max.

After bore sighting etc, the final confirmation group, I shoot 3 rounds, it's for hunting, measured 19mm centre to centre.

Can't wait to get out foxing with it.

Neither of my howas have a 3 position safety, nor anyone’s at my club as far as I’m aware. What model do you have?

Strange - Howa USA website states that all Howa's have a 3 position safety. My 1500 and any others I've seen certainly do.

And yet the howa 1500 manual describes a 2 position safety……

Is yours a 1500?

Maybe it’s a new feature, me creedmoor is around 5 years old.

The 3 position safety sounds like a disaster, since the OFF position is in the middle. Also sounds like that somebody invented "3 position safety is a must" and then engineering team proceeded to make such safety but differing from existing implementations (probably due to some technical restriction).

It’s off when it’s pushed fully forward, exposing the red dot. As you’d expect.

Working on howa trigger at the moment trigger pull is currently 5lb, hopefully get it down to 2lb

I have it zeroed with the 50gr for now and I have 3 boxes that I picked up when I oicked up the rifle.

When I start to run low I might try other ammunition. Mostly the Hornady 50gr available here in Ireland
