Hunter Style Steel Place Event Poll - Discussion

Following on from the recent survey regarding a Hunter Style Steel Plate Shooting Event, id like to delve a little deeper.

There were over 70 positive responses from the forum in a week, which shows there is interest in this taking place

Not everyone wants to travel (I get that) and not everyone wants to "compete" or be placed under pressure (I get that also)

The previous thread provided some useful insight into what people may want included:

Maximum distance - realistic to sporting rifles (Fox and Deer) so - Sub 400 mtrs

Maximum round count - 50 ?

An event would be beneficial to increasing skill levels

If people wanted to treat the event as a "competition" then there should be classes to suit the rifles used, basically any rifle used should be "in keeping" with a sporting rifle : such as, Standard from factory fixed power scoped, Standard from factory variable powder scoped, Non Standard Scoped (fixed power), Non standard Variable power scoped

Cost - ideally set top cover any outlay but kept to a minimum

Ive created a poll regarding a location - ive already had a very kind offer of the use of land in the Scottish Border Area, there are also three main providers who have the facilities in house - hence the locations in the poll

This sounds really good, I always feel like my practice at a range isn’t really practice for real world stalking.

Would there be different shooting positions like in HFT; standing supported, kneeling un-supported, prone, etc?

I think an event such as this would be invaluable for improving the standard we hold ourselves too.

I have voted Scotland for myself as it's closest for me, but I would travel and do an overnight stay elsewhere to support the event if held elsewhere.

In my opinion if you wish to split it into classes I would do a simple divide as inside 400M the scope will make the most difference: Non Graduated or Dialable Scopes - Graduated and/or Dialable.

In terms of max round count I would say 50-60 + zeroing would be very reasonable, 5-8 shot stages would in my opinion be enough for sporting rifles while still allowing the simulation of multiple animals taken in succession and forcing a mag change/reload in most instances.

Would free choice of position not be more realistic, have a somewhat unknown stage/targets you have to react to on the fly without preplanned drops etc and choose how you shoot it in the moment?

In my world there would be a stage presented :

This (these) are the targets on this stage

This is the area you may shoot from and stay within it

You choose the most stable and applicable position to you to engage the target successfully

Was thinking of multi and single distance to replicate realistic stalking / fox “events”

I already "Stay over" at some range days, so voted mid Wales as being more central for me for a change.

See it as a plea for inclusivity as I’m struggling to cope with this Northern bias!

If there’s a Landowner who would be prepared to offer the use of a suitable area in the south then it could be looked at

I suspect you might have trouble nailing down ‘in keeping with a sporting rifle’. I have only ever stalked with a Ruger Precision Rifle - I’m 6’3” and it’s the only rifle I’ve ever found that fits me when shooting prone. (16.5” L.O.P).

The SIG CROSS is SIG’s take on what a factory stalking rifle will look like in the future, but I suspect that the old school wouldn’t consider it a traditional factory sporting rifle.

What would happen if someone were to turn up with a rifle which the oraganisers considered was inappropriate, but they were able to show on their FAC that they had permission to use it for stalking?

I know some people who go stalking with an Accuracy International chambered in 300NM.

I’m just playing devil’s advocate here, but I suspect this aspect might be quite difficult to police/justify.

I agree that different classes of scope would be a great way of levelling the field, and there is no ambiguity about where a scope is fixed or variable mag.
