if not a truck , which 4x4 ?

Never seen one lifted, might affect the road experience , to be fair I had a Dacia duster 4x4 before and they are on the same level off road, just the duster is lighter and not so nice on a long journey.

not in the same league as you guys but im now planning to get rid of my third freelander 1
after over 20 years of owning 3 of them
in all that time ive got one stuck once and by the time my dad in a Nissan xtrail had come to my rescue i had got it out
would never recommend them to anyone who doesn't like doing some work on them.
but they do seem to work there way into your heart
i think the biggest problem with them apart from the transfer box and viscous coupling is the lack of ground clearance
every 4x4 or motor you buy seems to have problems of some type or another, the end of the day you pay your money, take your pick and live with the problems

Interesting thread.

I am currently changing jobs so have switched my D-Max (loved it) for a Superb estate as I’ll be doing a lot of miles. It’s getting a tow hook so I can take my ifor p6 around for transporting reds and my quad for the cumbrian fells. It’s a slightly clumsy setup but better than nothing. I must confess a recent trip to my ground in the borders was very pleasant not to use 3/4 of a tank as it would be with a pick up.

Plan is to run like this for the rest of the season and re-evaluate. The alternative is to pick up a cheap vitara/X trail and have it as a dedicated stalking/shoot truck. Or a wee van? A pal helped me last night with some reds and his partner van was tremendous.

I’m not sure I would get another pick up. Every make seems littered with horrendous problems. Ford’s…just awful, belts snap for fun. L200 now non existent, Old hiluxes are rot boxes, new ones have a lot of issues, VW are rangers, D max are pretty solid but can have a lot of DPF issues.
