I really can’t see how the 6.5CM is a poor choice for anyone starting out, other than it’s a bit vanilla. It’s not overkill for muntie, good enough for reds and you’ll have the best pick of rifles and ammo. Frankly, I’d worry more about someone advising a newbie not to go with one.

That is good of you and I am sure they do, however you can only take a few where all of the members can read what has been written, as I explained with reloading that written information is shared over the whole of SD but it is quite clear many have the time string long sentence's together over subjects they particularly disagree with with
(look at all the replies of people who took the time to tell you was wrong about mods off ticket) as a good example
It is like watching Master Mind with them passing and falling apart on general knowledge.
Indeed. I do like reading your posts as they are very informative.
It’s all part of the learning process for newbies.

It’s funny because one of my stalking buddies opted for a 6.5 and he umm’d and arr’d about whether to go for a Swede (first calibre he shot) or a creed (what the gunshop was pushing).
Ultimately he went for a creed but is now going to sell it and flip to a Swede because he feels it’s a more versatile calibre.

I did chuckle as I shoot a Swede and I think it is a great all round calibre and I suggested he might feel the same!

You couldn’t be more correct 👍

One of the finest calibres I’ve owned the 6.5x55

There is a saying that arguing with an idiot is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the bird is going to **** on the board and strut around like it won anyway.
I think this applies to arguing with someone who slates the creedmoor whilst saying that the 6.5x55 is one of the finest cartridges.

I’m not meaning to be flippant but how is it any different? A quick look at reloading tables or factory ammo tells you they both shoot exactly the same bullets at near enough the same speed - the deer doesn’t know what cartridge propelled the bullet!

Having shot both, the Swede, to me, recoils differently - more of a push than a shove.
I don’t reload - Paul at case prep does it all for me, so I don’t know the in’s and out’s of the reloading calcs, but I guess each calibre has a ‘feel’ to it and I, personally, find the feel of the swede to be perfect.
I use 120gn noslers which have an MV of about 2750fps, and that is perfect for my rifle in terms of repeatable accuracy.
I also have a 243 and a 308 and each has its own characteristics which suit different conditions, deer, etc.

A lot of people simply aren’t interested in telling people about the deer they shoot.
Remember this intro...Like I said people read posts ASK questions  See Lee lol @Leec6.5

hi , im new to stalking and have been spending alot of time lately trying to shoot muntjac in some of the woods on our farm. however , it seems that no matter how much time i put in i never have any success eaven though there are numerous munjac in the woods :suss: ,i know by the amount of tracks and because we all see them in there whilst walking the dogs through there. i am using a .223 although in places you can only see 50 yards because it is so over grown.are there any tips like using licks or calls that could give me more luck. any help appreciated, thanks

You went to something I posted in 2011 when I was 15 years old? That was 5 years before I started shooting professionally at 20, I’m now 30?! If your point is that I was new to stalking 15 years ago when I was 15 years old then well done! Point made! 🙄😂

If you prefer it then that’s a good enough reason as any, I still prefer the 270 I had to the 06 I now have - even though the 06 is more versatile.

My point is there is no demonstrable difference, hence feeling it’s a good choice for a newbie, even if a bit boring.

Nowt wrong with a 270 or an 06. Both have dispatched thousands of deer over the years.

Re modern vs old chamberings, I do think we are now in the realms of cigarette papers between many, what with all of the wssm/prc/cm cartridges and the small differences in calibre for each one.
I get it for target disciplines, but for stalking I don’t get it. A c19 6.5x55 will drop elk as well today as it did when it was first invented, so why the need to create something very similar but a bit more modern?

Unless we are all being driven by the firearm manufacturers who desperately want us to buy something new??

Age has nothing to do with it, you came on here to learn like all of us, then gave you reasons that people who post in write up's don't shoot enough deer. So people new to stalking will pick up ways methods from reading post on stalking.
You have done well but understand we all started some where at some point... Age is but a number. :)

You have massively misunderstood me. I didn’t say that they don’t shoot enough deer, i said that I would hazard a guess that they haven’t shot many. This is because people who get excited enough to do a write up tend to have not shot that many. As people shoot more and more deer the novelty wears off and people can’t be bothered to do write ups anymore. Part of my job is training new stalkers, seems odd to be criticised for not understanding that everyone has to start somewhere when this morning I took a client to shoot their first deer and then gave them a full gralloching and larder lesson afterwards.

Yes but you could have shared your day but chose not to as you said. people shoot more and more deer the novelty wears off and people can’t be bothered to do write ups anymore. You have a good opportunity to pass that on but prefer not to Nice one. 🤷‍♂️

The 6.5x55 is one of the finest cartridges , along with the 243, 308, 270, 3006 and the 7x57.

The 308 I put in the same realm of the creedmoor, calibres that are just not needed

I have never done a write up (most cwd stalks are relatively uninteresting) but have shot over 400 deer in my time, which is chicken feed for some in here but not too shabby for a recreational stalker.

If I shot more interesting deer then maybe I would write on, but for now I will enjoy reading others’ exploits, hoping that they get inspired to do more or to inspire others to get stuck in.
