I'm torn, 17H, 222,223???

All sage comments and none the wiser.
I've owned three 222 and three 22 hornets, miss the 222's the most.

Anyone shot ppu 222 ammunition? It's quite cheap etc....
Tried 50 grn .222 ppu in my Beeza and couldn't keep them on a sheet of A4 at 100 yards. Norma wouldn't much better.
Federal 40grn V-Shok shot ragged holes.
You need to reload really.

I use my .222 (unmoderated) at night. I recently shot a fox 100 yrds away from the back door, I was 50 yrds away from the back door (so shooting away from the house.)

When I got back in I asked my son, who was in the house reading, no music or telly on etc, "How load was the bang? "

He said "What bang?"

(Apologies if I have mentioned this before)

'Nuff said, Ade

To add, I've had hmr & 204 shooting side by side as one cools both with wildcat mods on. Yeah 204 is louder, but it's not loud, you know?

Another vote for the humble .222 - great round and reasonably easy to suppress. But I'm also going to throw in the .17 Fireball - not so many rifles about, but a cracking round - I love mine.
I was very interested in a .17 Fireball a few years back but I believe that the brass wasn’t easy to come by. Is that still the case or was I misinformed?

Muntjac a Chinese deer legal South of the border and Roe in Scotland. All from 16 grains (Or less) of powder.
Ken.

If you are using factory ammo I suggest .223. If you are reloading I suggest .222 as it is a bit quieter and lower recoiling than .223 yet I find that due to the efficiency of the case it shoots the same velocity with 55gr bullets as the standard 55gr military .223 cartridge. Accuracy of the .222 is excellent in my experience:

I know that the 17 HMR with non toxic ammo is being used widely by the likes of Forestry commission and other agencies for vermin control and has replace the 22lr.

I have a Remington 700 in 223 with a 1 in 12” twist rate. It shoots a 50gr copper bullet very well. Below is the effect on a crow at 150 odd yards after being hit by a 51gn Peregrine bullet. Same bullet works very well on Roe, and whilst I haven’t yet I suspect effect on a fox will be equally terminal.

223 is easy to get ammo for with plenty of non toxic options. And I would probably go for a 1 in 9” or 10” twist as that gives you a greater choice of bullets. 222, in older models tends ti have a bit slower twist rate, yet I know @Edinburgh Rifles have developed loads that work well in older CZ 222.

I am waiting for a 1 in 12” twist to line a Rook rifle to 22 Hornet to give me a light small game / vermin rifle.

Will probably drop down to a 35 to 40 odd grain bullet of non toxic variety for this application.

Thems nice crows. Converted crow, highly recommended.
