Is this 6 point buck worthy of getting it cic medal checked

650 dry for gold
560 for gold after deductions
Incorrect. From the CIC website:

Key Features For Measuring Antlers

  • A bronze medal Roe buck will generally need a dry full skull weight of at least 455 g, and a volume of at least 150 ccs.
  • A silver medal will probably require a dry full skull weight of at least 510 g and a volume of at least 165 ccs, with a gold medal normally requiring a dry skull weight of 570 g and a volume of 200 ccs.

So neat that you guys have a medal/scoring system. I think it’s a great idea.

It is a mixed blessing TBH.

Of course it's nice to be able to guage one head against another across different parts of the country and the world, particularly for those with an interest in a specific species, but it also has brought out a tendency for everything to be about the size of the antlers.

Some stalkers seem to forget that the antlers are everything to do with the deer, and little (if anything) to do with the stalker. By and large the stalker was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time. It has also led to an unfortunate development with some outfitters, particularly abroad, resorting to supplementary feeding in order to try to produce record heads - somewhat akin to what has happened with the monster stillwater trout farms.

The danger is that the obsession over antlers almost becomes an end in itself, with stalkers constantly searching for bigger antlers and more medals. Freud would have a field day!

Also, as we have seen elsewhere, opponents will use this obsession with trophies against us.

I understand where you’re coming from, stalkers lose focus on what’s important and fixate on trophy hunting. I’d like to think that’s a very small number of us… though I could see a medal system fuelling one’s drive to get bigger and better antlers.

I’ve shot animals before thinking “I wonder what this would score”, but have never taken measurements or bothered with it as trophy animals are very rare- and I don’t seek them out. But if I could be told “your moose is a bronze,” it would make it clear what a bronze, silver or gold moose would look like comparatively.

I know that I will get slated for this (as usual) but the question people who shoot trophies should ask themselves is why? It's rarely (not never) to improve the quality of the herd that's for sure! As Willie says, Trophy Hunting gives a poor impression of what we do to the antis and rightly so IMO.

Whiteheads Encyclopaedia of Deer shows the Boon and Crockett score. Moose (Alces alces). This is simplified but: Spread of 70". length of palm 45". Width of palm 16" and your looking at aprox 230 points. I can't find what that gives you, though suspect Gold as the world record was 255 points.
You'd need a big vehicle to carry it home LoL.

Not sure i agree with the Trophy hunting gives a bad name for hunting, i score as a hobby at a couple of shows a year, Whitetail deer, moose, bear and turkeys, always a good time listening to people and their hunting stories. It always begs the question, what defines a trophy, and who's impression? I like to shoot mature deer, strangely enough they typically have a good set of horns on them, but i am also not opposed to shooting a spike for meat.
a question, and not to start a pi$$ing match, but to highlight my point on what a trophy is within the eye of the beholder, @baguio your profile picture, is that a trophy to you? Please remember that an anti hunter wouldn't know the difference between a 200 or 500g deer, so any picture to them is offensive

Things may well be different in Canada.

Here in the UK, thanks to examples such as Cedric the lion and those typical facebook posts of "the mighty hunter" posing proudly over a carcass, the whole concept of trophy hunting has become something of a cause célèbre of late.

Mind you, if I'd shot the specific lion in the photo in that article I'd probably want all trophies banned too! ;)

The deer in my profile is a murder buck. If it wasn’t it would have been left. I boiled it out to use a training prop.

no, Anti hunters and their ilk are the same misinformed disney loving can't we all get along fools here as there lol
Most of my pictures are typically only shared on hunting forums, and if not for the anti hunting bandwagon i wouldn't have found this forum, it was from an article about reindeer hunting and had to find the outfitter, show some support.
I will share a picture with you, the one in my hand is my most cherished trophy, my sons first deer

Hi I’ve just shot my first roe buck this morning, do people think it’s Worthing sending it off after I’ve prepped it and let it dry for 30 days?

Many thanks
Claydy,

have you had time for those pictures yet? Or possibly a weight , even boiled out and wet may give some indication.

Lovely malform - congratulations! He’ll lose a point for the extra tine but absolutely worth getting measured. Good luck!!!!

I know that’s what I though although I think a couple of years ago he would have been better? Never shot an 8 pointer before
Why do you think he would have been better a couple of years ago? Looks like he's in his prime to me, that's all.

Obviously nobody knows, but the head doesn't look as though he has gone overly back.
Tines still nice and long and everything still relatively decent.
Left one last year, that I pondered about taking,an older beast,in top condition and a cracking head.
The lad that came up from Suffolk took it this month and the reduction in the antlers was pretty unbelievable in a year.
Have vids from him last year and this, and hard to believe the difference.
