Jacket or Smock ?

Looking to replace my old faithful Deerhunter jacket of 15 years. I quite like the look of a smock as you may know I am always budget conscious.
Are they better than a jacket? I will not pay more than £150.
Thanks, Tusker

If your not camo fussy, the Sportsman often has Deerhunter smocks reduced to under £30 on a deal.

I pick and beat in mine and its been good for a couple of seasons.

Must admit, I prefer a jacket with a game pocket to stalk in. Keep all my gralloch kit in there.

Depending on your size I have a harkila jacket for sale currently, within budget and happy to discuss price as it’s just sitting here in the wardrobe not being used

Jay Jays sell very good gabardine smocks in the old school SAS style for £120, although they are in MTP camo so that may not suit you. Gabardine is super lightweight, windproof and quick drying. You can layer up underneath when it's cold and when it rains throw a goretex packable coat on underneath the smock, or over the top. I used to be always on the lookout for the best waterproof/breathable coat but this system is much more effective imho. Some people don't like wearing camo but I always think it looks pretty cool as long you wear plain trousers or plus fours along with it. You can get issued SAS smocks on ebay for about 60 in the old DPM pattern which I prefer.

I’ve used a hooded smock type for many years the Swann dri but I soon learnt that if you got a few miles to yomp they are not the best thing, mix up the under shirt / and you got a sweat box, they are excellent for high seat use and very good at keeping the cold out as a outer layer, in the torrential rain they get heavy, but still a very decent bit of kit with an extra bit to use to sit on

i now use the same green model with a faultless zip, that allows for venting when you get warmed up, both are very hard wearing and reliable, should be just in your price bracket

I just got a Deerhunter Pro Gamekeeper smock for the new season.
Easy enough to get in and out of, large ventilation zips under each arm and the skirt it can be folded up and tucked under allowing for great leg freedom and useful on warmer days.
It's thin so you can layer up or down underneath depending on temperature. There is plenty of room to do so.
I paid £159 from New Forest Clothing and it had free postage.

Usually prefer a jacket but I’m tempted by the offer at John Norris of Penrith with regards to a Hoggs of Fife Struther smock for £64 but shipping costs are rather high from them.

Surely they are are like rifles...can never have too many

Deerhunter Smock is my go to Jacket. Even take it on pheasant days as a spare. Warm, dry, very comfy and practical. Wear it on a hot day and yes...you loose a bit of weight

Deerhunter Ram 2 jacket and trousers. Simply awesome and great for pigeons, foxing and stalking (should’ve gone for green though)

Musto coat the official pheasant attire...fantastic in the wet. Was very expensive but has lasted years..too thick for stalking unless Baltic conditions

As a larger than your average bear kinda guy they all make me sweat when getting a proper march on or lumping game about.

I have a swanndri zip smock in sort of DPM cammo, size large that's surplus and previously advertised on here. £70 posted. Pm me if you're interested. Dave

I prefer jackets as you can unzip them for a breather when it’s getting too hot. Impossible with a smock
I have been guilty of wearing a smock also.
Same as those horrible half zip NZ styles of fleece pullovers

Yes its ****ing terrible to climb a steep hill, arrive at the top for a breather and cant open the front of the smock like we can with a jacket.
Off with day pack binos etc just to cool off with the smock off...nah!

Get it, got one, Brilliant value!
If you don't I will ( if its a Large)

They offer it in either jacket or smock configuration and you only need find an additional £10:
