Jelen advanced deer management

Jelen course is excellent..... I did mine a few years ago now and thoroughly enjoyed it and learmed alot too!.
Mike is constantly re devoloping and updating the course so no doubt it will be even more informative.
I would go for it!!

I did the BDS course. It was excellent, covered a lot of ground and had very knowledgeable tutors. Highly recommended.

I also did the BDS course, think it was 4 or 5 days, really enjoyed it, covers a lot of things even to the extent of the cost of feeding park deer, cost of deer fencing, etc etc

Unless you can find someone that has done both as a comparison, you are only really likely to find out which one people have attended and whether they liked it or not.
It has also changed quite a lot over the years. I did the BDS one 11 years ago when it was still 5 days long.
I believe the main content is the same, but without the advanced shooting test or the visit to an estate.
I would have thought that geographically, the next BDS one in the Midlands would suit your location?

I did the BDS course in March this year, its a three day course. with a lot of ground to cover , The instructors were excellent and really knew their stuff and made it very enjoyable,

It's some years ago, but I expressed an interest in attending a Jelen advanced deer management course in Scotland. Nothing ever transpired. I recently attended the BDS Deer Management course and was very pleased with that.

Hi Geoff,
we must have been at the same course (fording bridge) yes very good instructors and a good few days enjoyed. I felt it was a lot to squeeze in , in the time the course ran

If I think correctly the courses have to be different as it's something to do with the lantra registration or something hence them having different names ''someone please correct me if I'm wrong'' so maybe best to speak to both providers to see which course suits you best.
I did the BDS version a few years back and really enjoyed it but was amazed at the diversity of content ''it covers far more angles than you think''
Where abouts are you in Lincolnshire. ? If ya not a million miles away from me I'd gladly meet up and show you the folder that we worked from.
Best of luck
Jimmy

Hi Bandit/ yes i agree the course was very good but an extra day would have taken the pressure off.

The jelen course has 15 home assignments that have to be completed prior to starting the course whereas the bds apparently doesn’t send out any prior to the start.
Unfortunatly the bds course at Kettering is fully booked and I am 61st reserve so safe to say I am not getting on it.
Thanks for all your replies

Whilst I agree with all that MS says here - I did my DSC level 1 with Jelen and can offer some general observations about training with them:

1) Mike was very knowledgeable and approachable
2) His staff were as well
3) The facilities are good (conference type table and big screen television). Lots of deer related "props" in the form of various mounts, skulls and shed/collected antlers
4) The catered food and drink were good
5) The business includes an RFD which may prove to be useful if you need ammo etc.
6) They had some good "E" resources available for studying before the actual course days

On the strength of my experience I thought Jelen a good training provider. Really and truly the whole thing was let down only in one regard - an external SME whom Mike had brought in was, in my opinion, not very helpful. Not only did he misidentify deer species in the photographs, he spoke a lot of twaddle about throwing your rifle bolt into the bushes if you are approached by antis, and told us we should only talk in terms of "deer management" as opposed to stalking, hunting, shooting etc. Anyway, one fly in otherwise good ointment - and I don't Mike would have asked him back!

I don't know how much of that would be relevant to you - and as MS says, you might well be better served by picking a training provider closer to you - but I found training with Jelen to be enjoyable, informative and effective since I passed despite not really having prepared as much in advance as I should have. I would feel confident that I would get high quality training with Jelen again.

Hope that is useful.

I done the BDS course in Hampshire and really enjoyed it. The instructors were first class as were the students. Really good bunch. I was lucky enough to share transport and accommodation with a friend which help massively with evening revision too. We both got distinctions so it must have helped. As others have said, there is a lot to learn. This isn't a sit at the back of the class half asleep and get pi55ed in the evening type of course. You will however learn loads even if you already know loads regardless of which provider you go with. It's certainly an achievement to pass it.

Taken the plunge and through the choice of dates only I have enrolled on the next Jelen Deer management course.
I have to say that I have spoken at length to Mike at jelen and I am glad that I enrolled with them. Within 2 days my course manual and 12 home assignments arrived.
Now the hard work begins!!!!

I’ve done both the Jelen and the BDS course. They both have plenty to offer. I must say I did like the pre - attendance essays with Jelen. I thought they set a good tone. I’ve also done a 15 week “Sustainable Deer Management” course with the University of the Highlands and Islands this year. I suppose I fall into the serial attender category. I’m already thinking about what I can do next year.

I did mine with Jelen a few years ago at Newton Stuart and I was very impressed with Mike and his team. Would definitely recommend him For this.

Did mine with Jelen a few years ago, I learned an awful lot and agree that Mike is very approachable and knowledgable
