Just had the police turn up while I was shooting

That's exactly what I do - not had a problem.

Why send your old one in? I sent a letter with my renewal saying that I needed the licence to continue my shooting and would return it when the new one was available, ie before they despatched it. They just sent me the new one and asked me to destroy the old one. Simples

When I have had delays, ask for a temperorary certificate, they usually won't give you one for a month but anything longer and its worth getting.

Sorry but Lincs say it takes as long to process a Temp permit as it does to issue a new or varied certificate so won't issue unless they weally........................................weally have to.. Told you they are not on the same planet as the rest of us.

Oh a real diamond was when Helen Wilkie said they never make mistakes !!!!!!!!!!!

This was supposed to be an easy quick one for one. As she told me if you need to swap any rifle round so you cans shoot another one then pop it in and is we cannot do it straight away it will only be a few days ... yep I watched her lips moving ................... yeah she was telling lies.

Am I reading this right................................... if you want to shoot one of your (not conditioned for shooting) collection, you have to get a variation to swap it around with one that's conditioned for shooting?

If that's the case then it amounts to a massive waste of public money. Get your MP involved, join SACS and rip into the idiots.

Excerpt from a past conversation in our kitchen, after ARV crew turn up following a malicious complaint against me while on private land, Plod 2, to Mrs Finnbear, "How far can you shoot with that then?" (.308Win), reply..."up to 1000 yds" Plod 2 "OH!" (surprised look on face)...... Plod 1, over radio, "cancel unit two etc", Plod 1, "How far can you shoot with that then?" (indicating .17HMR), Me ... "effectively around 200yds"............. etc etc etc,............ so I support the view that there must be a gap in training for some of them, like zero interaction with their sniper crews?.......... I have also worked on police firing ranges, & can vouch for the amount of tomfoolery that goes on.

 i thought this was hilarious

old bill with sense of humour classic.

a few extra grey hairs no doubt too... great to hear one of the ........ has a humour gene most have theirs removed at basic training.

ha ha all the same..

I well remember years ago me and a friend shooting wood pigeons with one of those new pigeon magnets not far from ponteland ,we had been shooting for about 3 hours and hand around 30 woodies, anyway we spotted this heli coming our direction it hoovered right above our heads ,immediatly we clicked its the police so we unloaded and put our shotguns to one side and sat there ,it watched us for 30 mins they could see a pile of pigeons ,20 decoys and a magnet whirling round to the left of us was 2 police cars 300 yards away watching us for the same lenght of time ,one of the officers came over and asked if we had permission yes we said (mates farm ) I said could the heli not see what we were doing ?they still contacted my farmer mate and told us to leave ,i wasnt happy but left anyway apparently a member of the public seen us running all over the field firing our weapons (bull ****) so watch out if you have a magnet they can bring in anything fom birds to helicopters ,.

If I was in that position Range Master and I was more than 50 feet from a right of way I think I'd have suggested that they leave, and to give their caller a kick up the ass on the way!

Thats probably what i should have done ,my mate farmer gave them a mouth full ,we were 200 yards from any roads,a good day spoilt ,what still puzzles me is why the chopper hovered above our heads for more than 20 mins .I really dont trust anyone when out stalking unless they are stalkers if you get what i mean,if i glass any public on a ride ect i just hide in the trees until the danger passes .

Strangely I'm quite the opposite. I'll make a point of talking to them! I've had a few people look like they thought they were about to be shot but after a quick chat and the offer of a bunny (all ready to cook mind) most people are quite reasonable!

My theory is that unless they're a really strong anti they will listen just to be polite, and once I've finished talking they can see enough of my side of the story to not be as bothered by what I'm doing as they were when they spotted me. Down side is a great number of them accept the offer of a bunny and a couple of times it's meant a trip to the chip shop on the way home as they took the only one I had!

I don't think I'd take being kicked off of ground I had permission to shoot too kindly if I hadn't broken any rules. If they pushed that idea too hard I get the feeling I may not be as polite as I usually aim to be! Just because they're the police doesn't mean they can make up laws to suit themselves!

Many years ago I had a farmer friend out to shoot his first Roebuck on one of my areas which was a bog adjacent to a dense forest.
This land was beside a secondry public highway.
As we proceeded to stalk a buck away from the road I noticed the top of a parked Police car above the hawthorn hedge at the top of the hill but said nothing to the rifleman as he had enough on his mind anyway.
Subsequently Alan dropped the buck with a good shot and after showing him the procedure which follows we dragged the beastie back to the road where my vehicle was parked, the Police car rolled down the hill, stopped and out he got.

`Bloody Hell` said he,`it is YOU`!

After exchanging pleasantries he went on his merry way. A few days later we had a meeting of our Deer Control Society and I re-counted the story and arranged for the secretary to write to the Chief Constable and thank him for the eternal vigilance of his staff !
Thus I made a friend for life !

Excellent way to handle things. Always worthwhile being polite and keeping on side.

the anti's dont walk round in the countryside with big "anti" writen on their back, me personaly & my mate r/master stalk in D/G and most of our ground past & present has had the southern upland way through it so we have more passers by than most . . . we are stalkers so we are aware of all thats moving etc and 9 times out of 10 hidden, we spot everything and walkers are easy to spot we all ways just hide away & let them pass, people are funny beings we could take you approach then next day that same person says "hey i was out for a strole in the woods and spotted a man running about waving a gun & im so stressed and scared etc etc.. " next thing knock on the door !! this is just what happened in the police helicopter, we were shooting pigeons all day hidden away in hide, we ended up being surrounded by armed police, when all was checked out and police who were great i asked who reported this & they said a walker hurd shots, well this is how things esculate... the nearest public path was 1/4 mile away!! the 999 call said men seen running round in a field waving guns in the air!!! christ the police even with their india99 (helicopter) and all its hi tech eqpt had difficulty finding us.. so thats how things get blown out of preportion......

I was out lamping foxes with a mate in January; whilst trundling down a back lane in the motor, a hand came out of the car coming towards us and us flagged us down, the hand belonging to the policeman driving said police car.

"Alright lads? What are you up to?"

We explained we were out controlling vermin on land for which we had permission - and then gave him the reference number we'd been provided by the local station that we'd rung into to advise just before setting out. He took a few details (car reg, etc), and then it was "I can see you're all legit," says the copper "it's the ones doing it illegally that we're after". All very polite, pleasant and sensible - just as it should be. It turned out that he shot air-rifles (as I still do), and so we had a bit of chat on that topic, before he drove off, having wished us goodnight and good luck.

All very amicable.

many years ago,1962, I had my first shooting permission, this was in northampton at a large country house and it was to shoot grey squirrels that were constantly damaging overhead power cables, I had a diana mod 21 177 air rifle, a gun license, which you had to have in those days, it covered you from airgun to shotgun, cost 3 shillings and sixpence (17 1/2p in to days money), you got it from the post office, it was perforated, it looked like a large stamp, no name or any thing, it just said gun licence - simple days - anyway this particular day decided to go and shoot some tree rats, gun was broke, in the crook of the arm ,in the same way you carry a shotgun, walking down the street, about half way to my perm a police car stops asks where I'm going I tell them where and why I'm going, they take gun off me, tell me to get into car and whisk me off to local nick, lock me in an intrview room and send for my old man, I'm only 14 and crapping myself, didn't know what was going on, old man turns up and I'm charged with carrying an uncovered weapon in a public place, apparently a few days before this a new statute had come out stating that all weapons had to be covered in a public place. Duly went to court was fined 10 shillings (50p), the old man went mad at the magistrates and they said because it was a new law the had to set a "pressident" (think thats how it's spelt). So yours truely the first to be criminally charged with this crime, am I notorious or what??? Callie

Funny you should say that if you had been walking down the street with a shot gun broken but not covered you would not have been charged as it ony applies to air weapons as far as I am aware you still can walk down the highway with an uncovered shotgun its not an offence as long as its broken .:D

stu:- for the fourth time of trying, I'm so inept with computers and key boards it's unbelievable, back to thread, as far as I'm aware this statute covers all weapons shotguns included, maybe someone on admin with a greater knowledge of the law could advise. callie
