Knives

What’s your go to knife? I’ve just sploshed out over £500 on various knives (I know in know). It’s a bad addiction.

I’m leaning to a small compact type knife for complex work. And a small axe for camping out and building pigeon hides (chopping fire wood, branches etc)

Species dictates really

I have 3 I use all by Danum

1. Small Muntjac.+ Danum
2. Medium Roe.+ Danum
3. Large fallow +. Danum
4. 1 Small 1 medium axes. Hultafors
The above Covers everything best kit I’ve got or ever likely to have real working material 👍

I have Ermmm others but these are the ones that work

I have a lot of knives which I have collected over the years, I posted on here on a previous thread about my addiction (Obsession) for collecting hunting knives but my go to knife at the minute is a Cheapish Victorinox Rabbit knife, easy to sharpen and maintenance free.
I must say though there is a couple of knife makers who are members on SD whose blades are very temptin at the minute so I'm really considering adding to my collection.
Obviously there Is a lot more makers on SD but this is just 2 that look good for me and when I can justify the need for another knife I maybe tempted.

Yep
👍The steel test thread , the I think a relatively new knife maker has put up some very nice working blades and fit for work and paddy Smyth blades are good stay sharp knives without a doubt.

As previously mentioned it’s very hard not to collect them as there are some lovely knife makers out there, one of the things I would personally like just on here the SD would be more of the lesser known or new bladesmiths showing their work, it wouldn’t do much for the collecting addiction but you can’t have everything your own way 🤣🤣🤣
The must have affliction is a terrible thing for your bank balance 🤣🤣🤣

I have a brushing hook in the truck but chopping back stuff is very rare to make a pigeon hide as I just bring the hide out from the hedge. Cutting yourself back in a hedge only restricts your field of view, also mean less to pack in the wheel barrow if it is a long push, besides if you have to move as the birds are using a different line then no chopping!

If where you need to be and sitting in the ditch is not practical then go on the headland no chopping

What species are you stalking?

If roe and muntjac, just get a Victorinox Rabbit. Cheap as chips and more than capable of the job required, with an ideal blade profile for the smaller species.

I have literally boxes of knives, many of them custom made, but it’s the Victorinox and a Fjallkniven WM1 that come with me on every outing. The latter is a carried around my neck as a backup, but hasn’t ever been needed.

For an axe, buy a Gransfors Small Hatchet. Just a lovely, tactile, sharp thing….you’ll understand if you’ve splashed out £500 on knives ;)

Rory aka Rambo Stalker
It works though... :norty:
4.7" blade on the SOG, with some good belly, the serrated portion means I can cut through sternum/rib area without worrying about damaging my primary edge. Aus-8 stainless steel which holds a good edge but is fairly easy to strop back to hair whittling sharpness. FRN handle and plastic sheath make for easy cleaning and hygienic materials.
The RAT 1 as a back up is again stainless, with a full flat grind, one handed opening and pocket clip.

Oh good. :tiphat:

Knives for stalking, or knives in general?

I've a Stuart Mitchell Ultralight I use for stalking, but carry a swing blade as a backup.

Day to day, I usually have my Spyderco UKPK on me. If I'm somewhere a bit more likely for someone to take umbrage, I'll take a simple SAK. I've also got some others though, like a TBS Boar folder, a Hoo, a CRKT Pilar, a Benchmade proper, and various SAKs.

On the "only carry with good reason" front, it's a Leatherman Wave+, a TBS Boar fixed blade for bushcraft, a Real Steel bushcraft fixed blade, and my Wood Tools axe.

Why am I not surprised
A lot of these answers Peter seem to be very much like the rifle/reloading threads when replies appear with the
whole spec of someone's rifle kit knife grouping (with load details) type of binos
when the question was asked "has any one some use ppu cases" ? .

You can of course " tart " your Granfors up to protect from wobbly aim damage.
I use a Snake,s knife and a Mora precision or hultafors copy both excellent for removing the Asus.

Buck 110 does everything I need to do with deer in the field.
I also carry a little tiny folding pruning saw in my stalking backpack for trimming encroaching growth around highseats.
