Landie Defender revival

Mines an L reg, '94 and its a 300tdi. The very first year they brought them out, it's on about 250k and still going strong!

Nice one mate! Been told that a well maintained 200 or 300 can put out 300k and then some. And when they do go, you can either get a brand spanking new one for around £3300, or look for a used one, and they can be as little as £300-£400.

Watch out though, one of the antis will be along shortly to ask if all those miles were on the back of a recovery truck! :D

Hmmm well I used to drive a 6.4T slide and tilt recovery truck around the M23 and lower section of the M25. We covered quite a bit of Surrey so Sarf London as well. I can only recall recovering a few Land Rovers that were not Free Landers suffered with HGF. One a Range Rover that lost a wheel nearly due to some tyre fitter monkey not torquing it up properly and a Disco that had blown a rad hose on the M25 come to mind. I think mainly due to the fact they were in fun positions on the motorway to get loaded safely. The boss preferred to use larger recovery vehicles whenever possible to vehicles of the Landrover size and weight plus my unit was on the Police list.

I don't include the accident damaged ones.

I must have picked up at least 10 BMW's for every land Rover I recovered and that includes the dreaded HGF's on the Free Landers.

It's also noticeable that the majority of recoveries were for new or almost new cars and the other large contributing group to the work load was ones that had just been serviced. Inept or poorly trained apes employed as mechanics provided us with lots of work every week.

Defender revival part Tolu!

Had a bit of a leak from around the area the fuel sender goes into the tank, and the fuel guage has been telling lies, so we drained out the tank and pulled it out:

Got the old sender out and fitted the new one, bit of a fiddley job, but in it went eventually. Before the tank went back in we welded the rear pair of mounting bolts in place on the wagon, that way you only need one tool to tighten/undo the nuts in the future should the tank need to come out again.

First of all we had to get my Mig working, it was a gift from a mate who couldn't get it working and gave up on it.

When she was going well, the bolts got welded:

Tank was re fitted, re filled and we went for a spin to get our dinner.

You may remember me saying in part Deux that we thought the injectors needed attention, well after replacing the old leaky fuel sender unit it appears that air must have been getting in the system, 'cos the wagon now pulls like a barsteward and doesn't miss a beat! Could have rushed out and blown nearly £200 large on 4 new or recon injectors, cured the problem with a £21.99 fuel sender unit!

I also pulled out the rear bench seats to give me more room for gear, and then fitted the new Exmoor trim seats. Pics to follow of those along with the Kenlowe fan in the mounted position.

What i have now after 3 solid weekends of work is a perfectly serviceable wagon that purrs like an angry dog! Any and all work now is purely going to be pimping. It doesn't Need doing, but it'll improve on the basic wagon and make it more 'Me'.

A new direct fit replacement Alisport Intercooler is on the cards to replace the old original which has seen better days. Hoping to save up for some Silverline Blindo alloys which are what we had on the WYMK's, probably the strongest alloys on the market and they don't look too shabby either to my eyes.

Eventually she'll also have some new suspension, a plus 2" lift in the rear and a plus 1" lift at the front to give it the same forward camber as the Land Rover Wolf, as seen on my battle chariots here:

The sandy one was Isobel-Mae, who my wagon is named after! The Wolf has always been the best looking Defender variant in my opinion. Another thing i would like is a Puma bonnet.

Found this pic a while ago that basically shows near as damn exactly what i have in mind:

Only thing i don't really require is the winch, but the colour in that pic is spot on and will be the last thing i do on the wagon. That pic even has the same alloys i want as well! Sort of a vision of the future for me that is.
