Larder hoists

I’m on my third winch in 10 years. I do like what they call the scaffolding winch, but they just don’t last. Does anyone have any feedback on what is a good one and one that can live in damp conditions, as I think it’s the steam from the deer that is getting into the workings that ruins them.
Or does anyone have one for sale?

I've just bought a 400kg one made by Clarke and it seems very good. I'm not sure how the steam from a carcass would be enough to make them stop working? Mine is positioned outside the chiller door to lift them onto the rail, its not exposed to any amount of damp as far as I can see.... granted its new and I may be saying different in a couple of years!!

Would it be possible to offset the pull with some pully system and encase the winch workings in a cosy box? Put a pully on the line to reduce the loading on the winch itself.

Our Clarke one, which lives outside the chiller, is over 20 years old and despite some slightly raggy wire, still works fine. However, if you want a manual one, try googling Silverline who seem to do a range of pulleys which might be of interest.

Is it a winch or a hoist? They are two different things, and the one isn't suited to the task of the other. .25-06 has the solution, I'd be very surprised to learn that moisture from the deer carcase actually was indeed the cause of your trouble.

All of my hoists have been the silverline 264782 power 500W. 250Kg or 125Kg so I’m thinking to double up on it all 1000W Clark 400Kg.
im only thinking that it might be moisture from warm deer getting into the electrical parts as it it mostly dry inside the building, I will put it up again and use as a single pull and box it in as some of you have suggested.

I installed a H bar in the chiller from the door to the back with rails going from left to right welded a metre x 50mm galvenised box steel ( lorry loading bar) on to four rollers on the h bar and slide this along with the geared hand winch I got from machine mart on the end of the box steel winch up the deer slide it in wind it above gambrel height attach the gambrel to the deer and lower down until deer takes the weight on the gambrel and slide along to where you want it on the cross bars, all I changed was this the wire on the winch for 7 strand stainless apart from that all as purchased

it does the job and keeps nice and clean, cost pennies to weld up

John, have you taken apart defective hoists and actually verified the failed parts? I share the doubts about the steam from deer.

Although I can see that the Silverline product is a hoist, it is worth noting that it is very true that winches and hoists are different tools. Hoists for lifting and winches for hauling/dragging.

It’s a hoist for lifting, it haven’t totally failed it just won’t lift the weigh it is supposed to, got it on 250 kg with double pull, it is very slow in the cold until it’s been used a few times, it lowers fine but won’t lift 60kg at the moment, any idea what the parts are needed? Could it be brushes? And can you get them? And where from?
thanks for the help.

I tried using the vehicle tow ball through a rope over a high pulley to lift fallow, sika or reds but soon moved to a Lidl chain hoist (usually meant for lifting car engines) it will lift any animal with ease and no breakdown with electrical or mechanical parts to worry about. All you have to do is position it so the animal can be swopped onto your rail system or whatever you have.
