Last known US WWI veteran dies today.

Just imagine what he had seen in his life, everything from the mundane to the overwheming.

I wonder how many of us would swap our time for his?

I missed my first Remembrance service in about 30 years last year due to illness, I still feel bad about it.

A couple of years ago I was at my Mothers for Christmas Day and an old Great Uncle was there, ashamed to say that I never knew him very well, Saving Private Ryan came on the TV. After the first few minutes, when the landing craft ramps go down and all hell breaks loose, he said: 'Bloody hell boy, they got that spot on, thats just how it was'. We were gobsmacked, he had never mentioned that before to anyone and never said anymore than that. He wasn't upset or anything but you could see that he was thinking about it. We knew that he was in Europe during the war as he married a German girl, but to think of him on the beach on D-Day was quite a shock.

The stuff that his generation had to deal with makes you feel pretty lame when you are moaning about some prat at work or your truck failing it MoT!

Right, got to get this off my chest. The great uncle that I mentioned above was burgled last night while he was asleep in his sheltered housing bungalow. The scrote(s) took all his cash and his wifes (who is in a home) jewlery. Thank God that he didn't wake up and confront them. Words can't describe what I would like to do to these people. JC

+1. The sooner we start peeling and salting those who would harm our old folk the better.
The day we forget the sacrifices made by those who fought and died for our free and tolerant society will a sad one. Anyone who abuses the privilege should face the same conditions as those who ensured we have our freedom today.

Mr Buckles ................old soilders never die, they just fade away. God rest his soul, men like this are not to be forgotten.

As for the scum that broke into the old gentlemens home.......... well we got rid of corporal punishment a while ago, and now this free society that many fought and died for allows arseholes like this to run around and commit such crimes against helpless people.

Bring back corporal punishment I say.............. hang em!! it will be cheaper than keeping them in prison, a wooden box and a 6ft hole is far cheaper.

I'll second that motion, and buy a spade and provide some good rough rope. 'The rights of criminals' has got to be one of the sickest phrases ever spoken.

i hope they catch the scum that did this to your great uncle, he should be put on the front line for Taliban shooting practice.

i went to Normandy for the 65th anniversary and it was a real eye opener to see what these young lads had to overcome on d-day, i saw all the beaches and its not until your there that you realise just how far they had to go in open ground with no cover and under immense fire from the biggest bunkers you have ever seen! especially the yanks at Omaha beech and many of these troops were fresh troops having seen no battle before.
my grandfather was at arnhem in the market garden opp, when he was alive i took him back there, as we walked round the cemetrys he had tears rolling down his face, iv never seen him like this and cant imagine what he must have gone through, he even had tears when we visited the german grave yards, he said when he was a young man he always said the only good german is a dead german, but i dont think like that now!, what a waste all because of 1 man!!!
we owe a great debt of gratitude to all that has served this country in all wars no matter what nationality from the first soldier to those bravely serving now. BB

It's the opinion of this member of Admin, there is no deterrent for those that break the law, prison by all accounts is not feared by the criminal fraternity so maybe we should have something that is.

I fail to understand how those that have shown no regard for other people, their property and society in general when they get caught and sent to prison are protected by a set of rules designed to make their lives as comfortable as possible. They seem to thrive in a society of their own with no rules, let them be locked away without the benefit of the rules that look after them.
