Law change on catapults?

Hello, BBC South Today had a report on Catapults , Birds shot out of trees, Swans shot with ball bearings , Family cat lost an Eye, It needs reclassified to over 18s
Why? What is that going to achieve? All of those things are already illegal.Changing the law will achiever nothing. If they want it to stop they coukd try the radical step of havng the police do their job.
but you can easy make one, Although there now going at fishing Catapults ??

Not sure I believe everyone who says they never did anything stupid with a catapult (or god knows what else) as a kid.

I was a good kid generally and stayed out of trouble but I still shot my fair amount of glass bottles sat atop the gravel pits down the air base, where we obviously shouldn't have been. We shot pigeons off telegraph poles and went rabbiting with them as well. We got fairly proficient but if I am being honest, we were more irresponsible with catapults than with air rifles. I think to an average child, a catapult was seen as a fun toy whereas a gun was seen as a gun. We didn't mess about with those (much)

I recall being shot with a ping pong ball at point blank range with a catapult in the back of the calf. F88k me backwards that hurt

Anyway, they shouldn't be banned but such is life. Not sure the kids of today have enough about them to put together a half decent weapon with odds and sods from the wood shed. I remember making balsa wood planes and launching them from insanely powerful ground anchored catapults. Bloody things went about 300yds ha ha ha. No idea where they would end up but we did that in built up areas until we learned it was a bad idea. You cannot get experience without experience. Pain (or a massive bollocking) is a great teacher.

I shot myself in the eye with an air rifle in Mark "Pappy" Poole's back garden. Like the poor sod that got killed when they tested the PIAT it was (not that I knew about such at the time). We'd put a target up, pinned, on a wooden fence post. And the air rifle being Pappy's cheap whatever the pellet didn't penetrate into the post but bounced back. I remember watching it come straight back into my open (aiming) right eye. But as it was so low powered it fortunately didn't penetrate my eye. But I always reckon that's why the vision in that right eye is worse than in my left eye.

Sigh….. do you have an ev or even driven one ?
Equally valid if he hasn't. The point is that forcing increased cost and increased control reduces availability - as has already been occurring. Lower sales, increased cost, less mobile populace.

I have test driven a few EVs and own a PHEV. At this point in time, would not go down that route again and will not consider replacing the family car with an electric vehicle until they have some decent winter range.
Anything with batteries seems to attract increased purchase price, increased insurance costs and poorer residuals than ICE equivalents.

Regards

I watched the same report and the individuals in question are sick and are in no way undertaking a ‘country sport’.
Shooting cars, protected birds and other non vermin animals with a weapon and with no guarantee of a clean kill just highlights that these thugs want to cause mayhem and harm.
Legitimate use should be protected but this was far from legitimate.

Ok....found my catty.... elastics kaput... dried out ....away to look online where get another set

Hello, There is a follow up on this tonight, Fishing Catapults

As a kid I used to take the points out of cheap Woolworth darts and use those in my Black Widow. Great for messing about with but looking back they were fairly dangerous projectiles. We had a lot of space growing up in the countryside though. Even today I still make the odd catapult for a bit of target practice.

I think that the problem today is that many of today’s youths would use them for nefarious acts.
I had a black widow catapult as a kid and didn’t hit much with it, but let it rip into a group of people with a ball bearing and you and up with someone getting hurt.
We have an undertone of thuggery which is rising in the UK (as I witness as I walk from the station to my office in south London) and I’m not sure how we stop it, but not allowing a youngster in a city to buy one kind of makes sense.
You're right mate, that's the issue compared to kids of years past - and what's to blame?? The Internet. Social media, YouTube etc. Kids are bombarded with info these days that we'd never even heard of once but kids now see & hear things all day, lots of it inappropriate.

Consequences......
Kids dont have any....
You have a whole generation almost having their own kids now who have grown up without a smacked ar5e or a clip round earhole....
When we were kids ypu swung on a neighbours gate he shouted attack ypu to get off you did ! You sh1t yereself ...

Now same scenario kids turn round enmass tepll ypu to f**k off you peedo ! And then you find your car keyed up etc....

Yeah we had cattys but we knew consequences of going so far in its use.

Now there is no line...they simply dont care because nothing happens to them

And now that lot are near able to have kids of their own..... feral....perfect storm

They could use all the thugs with catapults to guard our shores and fire shots at the wee boats to make all the illegal immigrants think twice about coming to the land of milk and honey

On the international scene that would confirm a lot of what the rest of the world already thinks!

I can feel the government shaping up to ban catapults as another dumb highly specific law which is completely incorporated within existing legislation

We have a law banning any blade over 3 inches without good reason - but had to also ban zombie knives, samurai swords, throwing knives and a host of other specific knives with detailed descriptions

We already have a limit of 1 Joule on all air powered projectiles to be classed as Toy - but had to ban ALL blowpipes specifically (so yes using a biro tube to blow pellets of paper at your teacher is now specifically illegal - I am not kidding)

Hitting someone with a stick, threatening to do so or 'going equipped' is already illegal - but we had to specifically ban the american style baton (but not the british Bobby's truncheon)

We'll now go an ban catapults due to some fairly unspecified incidents and fishermen will need a licence or some other dumb crap when injuring animals is already a crime no matter what you use to do it

Constantly banning the tools used to do the crime rather than dealing with the tools doing the crime
