Lead free for Swede

Hi guys, I’m looking for a lead free option for my 6.5x55. I’m doing a cull next month and have been asked to use lead free.
I have got Barnes TTSX 120gr On hold at gun shop but as I have to head shoot I’m weary that the bullet will keep travelling for some distance after and even with a safe backstop I’m worried it might change angle after impact and not hit backstop.
Is there a better bullet that will disintegrate more on impact?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Very few
The entire premise of lead free bullets is so the lead exits the carcase in one peice
I don't understand the "have to head shoot" unless it is entirely park culls and even then why ask to use lead free if the carcase can be rendered lead free with a sharp knife?

drop deerbox a note
they carry Neilsen bullets which are designed to fragment into 4 pieces dramatically reducing the energy of the bullet
BUT they will still have a lot of energy in teh shank

What lead core bullet did you use for this purpose previously?

What deer and what range are you wishing to shoot them at?

If Barnes monolithic I would probably go for their 100gr ones...I am using 110gr in .308W...Barnes do not seem to do their MPG or Varmint Grenade copper/tin matrix bullets in 6.5mm but they would be an option in other chamberings...

RWS Evo Green has a frangible tin front section and they do a 93gr bullet in 6.5mm

Yeah it’s for a park and it’s straight into the food chain. I also don’t quite understand it if they are head shot and the head is cut off. Maybe they can print on the label that it was shot with lead free bullet.

It’s my first time doing it but I normally use Hornady SST in 140gr. Even on headshot they make quite a mess so not sure how much energy the bullet comes out at and what’s left of it.
Shooting Red and Fallow. Mostly spikers. All probably shot between 50 and 80 yards.
Can I buy the 100gr ones or do you have to load them?

Do you have access to a 243 or 270? You can get Barnes Varmint Grenade or MPG bullets respectively to suit for those.

Refuse to do it then if you disagree , if more of us stand up to stupid rules maybe it’ll make a difference

I have always had to load any lead-free.

Dauntsey guns have the Sako 120gr Barnes ammunition and also 4 boxes of the 100gr TTSX bullets in 6.5

They have said if I can use lead free it would be good but if not it’s still fine. I don’t mind but safety is my first concern. I think fast expanding lead bullets in this case might be the safest option until I can load my own.

For several years now I've used Barnes TTSX 120gr and LRX 127gr in my 6.5x55 to very good effect rib shooting Mainly Fallow Roe CWD and Muntjac. Now something I've personally found when Head Shooting Park deer they fragment excellently eg looks like they have been shot with a V-max projectile from my .25-06 i used a lot for Park Culling. Long winded but i have no problems using TTSX 120gr

So, does TTSX 120g copper replace 140g BT lead for terminal effect? IO assume you'd find a new POI and therefore re-zero, as you would for a new batch.

Honestly haven't a Clue mate. I only ever used 125gr Nosler Partition in my 6.5x55 for Deer stalking until i changed to Barnes TTSX and LRX years ago

I'm using RWS Evo Green in my Swede; approx 94 grains. Seems to do the job on roe and muntjac; chest shot a roe at around 100 yards tonight and performed just as well as lead with a good exit wound.
I think I'd stick to your usual lead ammunition in the situation you describe, although any bullet has the propensity to behave unpredictability.

I just looked up the RWS Evo Green. It actually looks like a great option. Found another option but not lead free. Norma 120gr Ballistic tip.

That Barnes 120gr bullet will be fine. I’ve been using it for a couple of years now.
It absolutely will penetrate more cleanly than a lead bullet but so what?
A deers head will never make a reliable backstop for any bullet.
