Lead update.

Perhaps if you had joined WAGBI in 1963/4 when I did, you might see things similarly.
In those days, I could speak to John Anderton on the phone at home, and get things done.
I was lucky, I had easy access in person, only a few hundred yards to the office in Watergate st, A world away from "The Mill".

Having read the so far 28 pages of this "debate" and seeing it from the outside. I have a few comments. I should also say I don't have an axe to grind in either camp as I have used lead shot in the UK and steel shot in DK plus a recent change to non lead rifle ammunition here.

1. Why on earth do various contributers keep bringing up other things such as ; plastic, cats, lead pipes, etc. None of them have anything to do with lead ammunition. In each case they are another issue that has as much to with any proposed ban on lead ammunition as the price of cod.

2. Why are people still talking about rimfire ammunition? Is it not along with air rifle ammunition exempt from any proposed ban?

3. You all seem to blame the various shooting organisations, but many are not members and many of those that are members are only members for the insurance. It doesn't sound like any of you take an active part in your various organisations. Why not step up?

4. Numerous contributers post in veiled terms about breaking the law with self labelling of ammunition as suitable for live quarry, or self loading lead shot in cases labelled bismuth or steel. ARE YOU DAFT? This is an open forum where anyone can read your posts.

plastic is relevant as it is a major cause of pollution in the environment, recognised by the orgs as the voluntary transition included moving away from single use plastic.

For Denmark

Plastic wads from shotgun ammunition are a significant source of plastic pollution in Denmark, and are among the most common types of litter found on Danish beaches.

There have been comments about all sorts of plastic in this discussion so your comment is a bit selective / defensive and again nothing to do with a proposed lead ban in the UK. But to address your comment. As you say plastic wads are a significant problem that the Jægerforbund and hunters themselves are actively participating in finding solutions for. Simply highlighting the issue and accepting it as a serious problem has led to a large number of Danes switching to biowad loads not just for hunting on the sea but everywhere else also. I switched to biowad cartridges for all my shotgun shooting other than approved ranges for clay shooting and our local club organised clay shoots are now using biowad ammunition only.

not selective or defensive just pointing out that even the shooting organisations recognised that a move to steel shot using single use plastic wads was far from ideal. We in the u.k. are as far as i know are the biggest market for fibre wads hence the importance of the goal of the shooting organisations. But you are correct wads are not part of the HSE lead ban proposal.
Bio-wads are as you say on the market, but currently are more expensive than single use plastic wads or fibre wads and a lot of u.k. clay grounds are fibre wads only. Hopefully progress will continue to be made with bio-wads to drive costs down.

What does that mean?

I'm not saying you should stop using lead or that you shouldn't. I don't have a choice as I cannot legally use lead but I choose to use biowads as it is better choice environmentally even though it does cost more.

At my old UK clay pigeon club we used to shoot plastic wads. But as it is an SSSI we had to change to fibre wads. Some people complained as their scores went down a little and some even jeopardised our club by continuing to use plastic wads. (Complete dick***ds) If I was still in the UK and at that club, I would be using fibre wad lead cartridges.

So I don't understand the laughing face.

You said you don't have an axe to grind....nothing left of the axe to grind!

I must admit I really do not understand why shooting has been allowed to continue to spread a highly toxic substance all across our prime agricultural land and it ending up in our foodstuffs for so long.

It was removed from everyday use in things such paints, make up, ink, water pipes, petrol etc etc many, many decades ago.

Probably because it's of no consequences compared to what else gets spread on prime agricultural land that ends up in our foodstuffs.

Lead as metal is used in industry every day still and my water pipes are still lead.

It's not in my makeup though👍🏻
