Leica range finder

I have a Leica LAF 1200 scan rangefinder.
When I press the range button the red square "target" lights up but I don't get any reading of the range. This happens both for short and longer range.
Is there a simple fix and, if so what is the solution other than buying a replacement?

Try a new battery first. A decent one you can trust. I’ve had similar issues in the past and a good replacement battery seemed to cure things. After the ‘oh sh1t it’s knackered’ panic the new battery seemed to rescue it.

Stating the obvious but first press brings up the square ‘aiming mark’ second press brings up the range on the non-scanning ones so assume that it’ll be the same on the scanning version??

Confirmed from user manual - need to press the button twice to get it to measure range & if button held on second press it goes into scanning mode.
