One thing I appreciate about living in Austria is the fact I can buy Category C firearms (shotguns, bolt action rifles, lever action rilfes, single shot rifles) very straightforwardly. When buying from a dealer, there is a three day cooling off period. When buying privately, no waiting period. As long as the buyer is over 18yrs old, an EU citizen, or in my case with an Article 50 residence card, no further paperwork or licences required.
Earlier this week I saw a nice Diana R22 22lr second hand on the Waffengebraucht (used firearms) website. It looked almost new and included a cheapish variable scope, tripod and muzzle break (just for fun!). €490. Turns out it was new in October 2023 and very little used.
This afternoon, I am the owner of said Diana R22. The sale involved a sale agreement document between the seller and myself, electronic banking transfer of funds and registration of myself as the new owner (via a dealer for the cost of €18).
Now I'm looking forward to watching my 10yr old learn the basics of marksmanship (and some quality plinking time for myself!).
