There is very little work and money being spent on long term neurological diseases such as Lyme, ME, MS or Long Covid and other long term effects of infectious disease. We are talking about a few £m in total with just a handful of research projects. Is there any mapping of areas associated with Lyme's ?
These sorts of disease are not sexy and do not get the sorts of attention of Cancer etc.
When I was being treated for Lyme I was referred to the Infectious disease clinic at the Western General in Edinburgh. It’s definitely the poor relation being stuck out in the car park in a porta cabin. With Long Covid I was again referred and it was still in the same place 15 years later.
Yet having been through the Oxygen treatment I have become very aware of the numbers who are suffering such disease. Because you have to pay for each session, it’s naturally self selecting and most going through are professionals of one sort or another. Most seem to be pretty high achievers, earning good money and paying good taxes. They are naturally fit and healthy.
I was one of the lucky ones - I could still walk and do things. I know several, who used to run marathons, ski instructors and consultants in heart surgery, leading academics, directors of major companies etc and all have been flattened by these diseases. And by flattened - about able to get up and get a bowl of cereal and then go back to bed.
What is truly scary is your inability to think, and to put words and thoughts together. You know they are there, put you can’t grab hold of them and the poo, piglet, haggis’s all jump in have there say in the matter. Makes no sense - but that’s brain fog for you.
And yet we have a significant portion of our society suffering from these sorts of conditions, not contributing very much, and the medical profession can do very little. AsI was told, its bit like a laptop computer. We can change the screen or keyboard or other components if they are broken. We can even change a battery. Trouble is you have something wrong with the charging system at a cellular level, we are not doing much research what is causing this, it keeps changing and we have no way of fixing it. Nor do we have the resources or time to help you improve things.
