Magneto speed shorter or V3?

hello, I am looking at getting a chrono, and considering the magnet speed ones.
I am getting it to look at speeds for reloading various calibers. A few shops have the sporter version for sub 200 quid.... although it says it will not fit over a mod. The only rifle i use with a mod really is the 243 and although would look at speed of round would then zero with the mod on anyway.
the 5.56, .38, .303 all shoot without mods so issue will not apply.

has anyone used both? if so, is the V3 worth paying about double the price? especially as i will mainly use only if changing something on my load....

Ditto. The V3 is worth the squeeze. Especially if you're only going to have one chronograph. May as well have it cover as many uses as possible, since you never know what rifles you'll have 10 yrs from now.

I don't use mods and am very happy with the sporter version.
I never use it though while testing accuracy as I've found it alters groupings and POI

Try seeing if you can rent one. I had the same dilemma as you, but I do use either moderated rifles in .223 & 6.5 or old service rifles .303 and K31. You can make the V3 work with service rifles using the muzzle brake extension thingy they sell but that adds another £170 to the V3 cost.

Anyway, I ended up hiring the Labradar from the range office at Bisley, £15 for a morning or afternoon. 3 sessions or £45 and my load development was done and the good thing is you can test accuracy at the same time. I also used the data to confirm bullet BC as you get a reading at 0yds and also at 30yds.

You seem to have choices in multiples of £200, the Sporter is £200, the V3 is £400 and the Labradar LITE with no bluetooth is £600.

If you can get away with the Sporter, I would get that, but you have to write down your readings as you are going along. The other 2 will store them for you. Otherwise, I would hire something, you aren't going to use it that often unless your life is a continuous cycle of load development.

Don't forget the old-fashioned Caldwell, it still has a place. I have one I picked up second hand and I use it a lot, I set it up at 2m away and fire five shots, then I set it up just in front of the target at 98m and fire another five. You can connect it to your phone to record the readings. They are a pain in the arse to set up though and I have to leave my iPhone connected to it when it's at the far end of the range. You also need to be really sure you are not going to shoot the chrono!

Forget the Caldwell, it will get shot sooner or later. Been there. Buy a magnetospeed. Have a V2 and it is staying. One of the few things I would not trade.
