Markongs on bullet neck after resizing

Hi all

Looking for some advice on the necks of this brand new Lapua case (.308) which has verticle markings on it. Hornady die used which is less then 1 year old. I use Imperial Dis Sizing Wax. I disassembled the die and cleaned it, though not that dirty, reassembled and lubed but marks still continued.

When did you last use the die, are you using a water based lube & did you clean, dry & oil the die after last use? Looks like micro scratching caused by rough surface on the neck of the die.

It can be removed if you strip the die down & use some wire wool wrapped around a dowel or brass rod & spun up in a drill chuck. If you want to then polish it use a strip of old t-shirt wrapped around the dowel & smeared with autosol or similar polish.

I use imperial sizing die wax

It's been a few months since it was last used. I looked at one of the first rounds I sized with it an no marks on that one.

I will try what you suggest.

What would you suggest covering the inside with after a reloading spell?

I use XCP in all.my dies when in storage.

Then you probably need to strip the die and clean it. I found that it can hold crud causing corrosion inside the die.

I had the same issue with my Hornady dies. I opened a support case with Hornady directly.

They shipped a new set out, FOC. New set, same issue. Continued the case.

Third set are slightly better and I believe the 2nd set went back to Hornady through Edgar bros.

The support case got past to their engineeing team, who are "stumped" and not seen something like it before... They even checked some of their stock of dies to see what they could.

I haven't pushed it further, as it doesn't affect the accuracy. So just something I live with. But currently only resized my brass once. So shall see if it worsens over time.

Make sure you have deburred the outside of the neck slightly with a small chamber.
That should help a lot.

I’ve never cleaned a die ever, I’m not that anally retarded over it!

I had the same once. There was scraped off brass residue stuck in the die. It was building up and it became worse over time. I could see it with my bore scope at 6x magnification. A good polish of the die solved the problem.

PS: That was a bushing die. And it was actually the bushing that had the brass residue inside. The bushing was one of those nitrite coated ones. They seem to be prone to collecting metal residue.

I didn't used to clean my dies, but after a £600 50BMG die set suffered from corrosion due to not being cleaned I soon changed my regime! Be stupid not to.
