Mauser m18 vs the rest

Hi all,

Looking to buy a .270 rifle. Have seen the Mauser m18 brand new only about 700£. This rifle has some decent reviews but seen a few bad also. Would a second hand tikka or Sako be a better option? A new tikka almost double the price of the Mauser. I will be using mostly for Reds.

Cheers

I'd be inclined to buy used from a South of England dealer. It'll be pristine as they're all frightened of the .270 down there 😆

I’d say buy Mauser. They are a lot better quality than tikka.

I have a M18, I bought it new for less than £600 five years ago. It shoots great but isn't exactly the prettiest or most refined rifle. It's pretty basic but it does the job and sort of grows on you.
I've also owned a couple of Tikka rifles previously, nothing wrong with the Mauser but just my opinion the Tikka is better quality and more refined than the M18.

Buy used quality is my preferred approach.

It’s £700 for a reason

If you want to spend £700 on a brand new rifle get an ATA Turqua
Two mags
Adjustable stock
Picatinny rail all as standard

For the money they are awesome

The m18 trigger leaves a lot to be desired
Really? I’ve had both and I’d say the Tikka has a better trigger
I suppose individual rifles of the same model can vary, I was quite surprised how good the trigger is on my M18 for what after all is a budget rifle.

One small thing that I have noticed with my M18 is that it can be very fiddly top loading with the fifth round when you've unchambered to cross an obstacle or climb a high seat. This isn't a problem with my Sako which is also has a double stack five round magazine. Top loading with only four rounds isn't a problem though so I tend to end up stalking with only four rounds in the magazine.

Mauser any day, shot an M18 since they came out, accurate and need “zero” maintenance. Triggers are fine on pretty much any modern rifle. Don’t mistake rugged and dependable for low quality.🐗🐐🦌🦡

Both perfectly serviceable and accurate. However the trigger on my M18 had a bit of ‘creep’ whereas all the tikka and sako rifles I have shot have triggers without creep that break very crisply.

I think M18 is disgrace for a brand like Mauser. I would just buy a second hand Tikka for same money.

I shoot an M12 and an M18; the 18 isn’t as good as the 12 hence the price difference but there’s nothing really wrong with it. How is it a disgrace?

I've had an M18 in .243 for around 5 years. Shoots very small groups off a bench, the trigger is very crisp, the finish has been robust to date with no rust on the barrel or action.
I don't think you'd be disappointed. The 5 shot sub moa sales pitch isn't all marketing fluff.
