Recently bought a Tikka T3 6.5x55 Rifle and like the calibre very much. Fine, I then saw 1913 Mauser m96 also in 6.5x55. All matching numbers and in terrific condition, I fell in love. The only problem was open sights. my eye sight not being what it was, i needed better sights, (For Me). I know that mounts are available, but mostly from the States and very expensive. The rifle is drilled to take dove tail mounts but using standard rings it is too low ( the bolt is not the right angle type but bent down) Where would I find correct mounts?.

Would you need to give up the Tikka to get the Swede? I have twelve M96, 6.5x55 but would trade half of them for the Tikka.

As to mounts, all would depend on the hole spacing. If they are on Weaver bases you would need to just use higher rings. Frankly, if it is a M96 and the bolt does not stick straight out, and the action drilled and tapped, the collector's value has been tanked. It is now just a shooter and you could have the bolt handle forged or rewelded to suit. Check the throat of the rifle for wear. Some pretty fine looking Swedes have had the hell shot out of them.~Muir

How are your eyes for distance and reading?
My distance vision is fine, but I need giggs for reading now. I've found that if I use my reading glasses I can now use open sights again; only at targets on a range, but I've had success out to 200m. The glasses mean I can comfortably use my beloved SMLE again.

Had the rifle checked before purchase. I think it is a M96/M38. It has a 29in barrel that is screw cut (for a blank firing Attachment). The only part not same numbered is the cleaning rod. The rifling is very good. The disc on the side of the butt is stamped one. The bolt looks original as some are and the rear sight is set at one hundred yards to three hundred, unlike original M96s . The only thing I feel not original are the four small holes, two in front, where the year date and name is and at the rear of the loading port. It came with two pieces that screw on dove tailed 11mm.
As I have stated, my eyes are not up to open sights but maybe with my reading glasses on and a peep sight, I could manage (Thanks, Harry Mac) I prefer not to use telescopic sights if I can get away with it.

I think the M96/M38 is normally a conversion from longer to shorter rifle. I have an M96 with Soderin dioptre sights that is lovely to shoot, but a PITA to lug around due to its length (52" overall), which is why I purchased an M38. The M38 barrel is 24" long, compared to the 29" M96 barrel, resulting in a rifle some 6 inches shorter overall. Both are great to shoot and the 6.5x55 cartridge is a peach.

If the dovetails are 11mm you have any number of choices for rings.
Sportsmatch for instance has quite a good amount of information with measurements on the website.
You should be able to find something from them or a multitude of other manufacturers for that size dovetail.

three holes or four drilled into the receiver?

does it have the stripper clip hump intact?

I have some one piece bases that take a range of rings to accommodate bolt lift but if its tapped to take two independent bases that any of the ring heights available from the old parker hale range, sportsmatch or similar will fit depending on the style of the dovetails fitted

or alternatively Leupold bolt on bases and rings
